June 1, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - June 1, 2012. The Madison Mallards (2-0) will play the first in a three game home and away weekend series tonight against the La Crosse Loggers (1-1). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
Last night the Mallards swept their first series of the season with a 7-1 win over the Battle Creek Bombers (0-2).
The sweep was due in large part to designated hitter Jeff Zimmerman (Northern Illinois), who powered the Mallards offense with five RBIs in the series.
Against the Loggers the Mallards will count on their leadoff hitter, center fielder John Welborn (Texas-San Antonio), to ignite the offense. In the previous series Welborn had two hits in seven at-bats, while also swiping a stolen base.
Taking the ball for the Mallards tonight is right-hander Trevor Foss (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). Mallards fans may remember Foss from his days at Janesville Craig High School. As a prep Foss made the All-State team and was rated the number four prospect in the state his senior year in 2008. In his 2012 collegiate season Foss made 17 appearances for the Islanders, including 10 starts. In 60.0 innings of work he posted a 5.10 ERA and registered 65 strikeouts.
Starting on the mound for the Loggers will be right-hander Nick Pasquale (Diablo Valley-CC). The Antioch, California native had a phenomenal 2012 season on the Diablo Valley pitching staff, compiling a 12-3 record with a 1.88 ERA over 110.1 innings of work. In his last start of his collegiate season Pasquale went 8.0 innings while surrendering 11 hits and five runs.
The Logger lineup will be looking to rebound from a series against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (1-1) in which they struggled offensively. Collectively the team only hit .188 and registered a .282 on base percentage against the Rafters pitching. Infielder Julien Jones (Sacramento-CC) represents a threat for the Loggers, hitting .500 with two RBIs on the season.
Tonight's game will be the last in a three game home stand for the Mallards. Tomorrow the team will hit the road for the first time this season and play games two and three of their series against the Loggers in La Crosse.
The 2012 season is upon us! Single-game tickets are on-sale for all Mallards home games!
The Mallards return to action tonight, as they host the La Crosse Loggers. Tonight's promotion will be the TDS Human Cannonball Home Run with Dave "The Bullet" Smith Jr.
The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League. The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America.
