St. Cloud Rox News Release
St. Cloud, Minn. - Playing in their second straight close game, the Rox (7-6) suffered their first home loss of the season, being edged by the Duluth Huskies (7-6) 4-3 in 11 innings.
The Rox got on the board first, as Chris Kwitzer (Buffalo) drove a ball to left, which was misplayed and cleared the loaded bases, giving St. Cloud a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies threatened to score several times in the early innings, but Rox started Shelby Lackey (Pacific) worked his way out of multiple jams, not allowing an earned run in his five innings of work.
Both teams put up zeroes in the middle innings, until the Huskies pushed across three runs in the sixth inning.
With the score tied, Burton Dulaney (Georgia Tech) made his first appearance of the season out of the bullpen, throwing three innings and striking out three batters while only allowing one hit. Andrew Burnick (Penn) came in to work a perfect ninth inning, giving the Rox a chance to walk-off for the second straight night.
The Rox could not capitalize, sending the game to extra innings. The Huskies broke the deadlock in the top of the 11th, with a single bringing in the go-ahead run.
Needing at least one in the bottom of the frame, the Rox put a runner on first, bringing the winning run to the plate. Brandon Benson (Georgia College) stepped up to the plate and lined a double into left field. Trevor Putzig (Tennessee Tech) took off from first on the play and tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate for the last out of the game.
The defeat was the Rox first loss at Joe Faber Field this year, and was also the first time they failed to score six runs at home.
Tonight's game one St. Cloud Times Player of the Game was Burton Dulaney for his solid relief appearance. For more coverage of the Rox during the 2016 season visit www.sctimes.com.
