Long Ball Not Enough as Bullfrogs Fall to Growlers
June 12, 2016 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The Bullfrogs drop the first game against the Kalamazoo Growlers 11-5. Not the result the Bullfrogs were looking for after last night's come from behind win. The long ball was not enough as the Bullfrogs offense was unable to keep up with the Growlers. The Bullfrogs record drops to 4-9 on the season.
In the doubleheader last night, a lot of pitchers were used for the Bullfrogs. An emphasis going into this ballgame was to try to give those bullpen arms a break. Clayton Uselman got the start, going three plus innings before being replaced by Matt Ellenbest (Morehead State). The Bullfrogs pitching staff struggled missing bats today as the Growlers had 12 hits. Matt McCarthy (Penn State) finished out the last two innings of the game, allowing no runs.
The Bullfrogs utilized the long ball today as they hit two big home runs to left field. Colton Onstott (Dodge City Community College) got it started with an opposite field home run in the fifth. One batter later, Chad Mabini (Western Carolina) sent a no doubter to left field for the second home run in the inning. Both solo shots. Laren Esutace (Indiana) finished with a couple of hits and Marcus Shoemaker (Lenoir Rhyne University) had one RBI on a one out double in the eighth.
Chris Botsoe (Louisville) made two spectacle plays in the field today for the Bullfrogs. In the bottom of the fourth, the left fielder jumped up and robbed a home run from Eli Lovell (Kansas City Kansas CC). Botsoe fell over the fence as he made the catch, a run would score on the sac fly. Later in the game, Botsoe took away extra base hit from Connor Kopach (Southern Illinois) as he made a running catch slamming into the fence.
For the Growlers, Connor Olsen (Concordia) finished with three hits and three RBIs and Dan Robinson continued his dominance with another multi hit game. Michael Brettell (Central Michigan) picked up the win for the Growlers as he went five innings, giving up three runs. The Growlers extended their win streak to seven, moving to 9-4 on the season.
Bullfrogs will be back in action tomorrow night against the Growlers. Luke Lind will get the start for the Bullfrogs. First pitch is at 7:05 ET (6:05 CT)
