Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
The Battle Creek Bombers scored two runs in the first inning, and it would be all they needed as they topped the Lakeshore Chinhooks, 2-0, at Kapco Park Sunday evening.
After Jarrod Watkins reached on an error by Chinooks' second baseman Royce Ando, Daniel Jipping knocked him home on an RBI double, giving the Bombers a 1-0 lead. Chrisitian Helsel followed Jipping's hit with a double of his own, giving the Bombers a 2-0 lead.
And with Jordan Horak dealing on the mound, it'd be all the Bombers would need. Horak pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and five base runners while striking out five. Horak picked up the win for the Bombers, moving to 2-1 on the season.
Horak's toughest inning came in the sixth, where the Chinooks had runners on second and third with one out, but Horak got Matt Johnson to foul out to catcher Alejandro Gomez and Owen Miller to ground out to end the inning.
Krystien Johnson-Battilana came on in relief for Horak in the seventh, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out one, before Brandon Guske came on for the ninth, nailing down his third save of the year for Battle Creek.
On the mound for the Chinooks, Keenan Bartlett took the loss for Lakeshore as he allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits, striking out five.
The Bombers are back in action Monday evening at Kapco Stadium as they face the Chinooks in game two of their two-game set at 6:35 CST/7:35 EST. The Bombers will send Felix Minjarez (1-0, 6.96 ERA) to the mound to face Cole Gnetz (0-0, 4.65 ERA).
