Waterloo, Iowa - Two former Waterloo Bucks were drafted on the third day of the 2016 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Saturday, bringing the total number of former Bucks drafted to five. Tyler Peyton and Zach McKinstry were taken in the later rounds of the draft, joining Day One draftees A.J. Puk, Cody Sedlock, and Dane Dunning as former Bucks to be selected.
The first Waterloo player selected on the third day of the 2016 MLB Draft was right-handed pitcher Tyler Peyton. Peyton was taken in the 29th round with the 884th pick by the Chicago Cubs. A product of the University of Iowa, Peyton played for the Bucks in 2013, seeing time as both a pitcher and first baseman. On the mound, the Grimes, Iowa native appeared in four games, finishing with a 1-0 record and a 3.20 ERA. As a hitter, Peyton saw 35 at bats, hitting .143. As a senior for the Hawkeyes, Peyton went 4-5 with a 4.24 ERA in 13 appearances, including 12 starts, over 68 innings. He went 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA over his final four starts with a complete game shutout and a 26 1/3 scoreless innings streak.
With the 1,001st overall pick (33rd round), the Los Angeles Dodgers selected shortstop Zach McKinstry. A product of Central Michigan University, McKinstry played for the Bucks in 2015, hitting .281 with 3 home runs, 21 RBI, and 8 stolen bases. This season for the Chippewas, the Ft. Wayne, Indiana native hit .325 with 26 RBI. He also stole 12 bases in 17 attempts and committed 17 errors on 286 chances at shortstop for a .941 fielding percentage.
The 2016 MLB Draft was a historic one for Waterloo, with a Northwoods League record three players from the same team selected in the first round in Puk, Sedlock, and Dunning.
