Rox double up Jackals, 12-6
July 11, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Brockton Rox News Release
With New Jersey in a must-win situation, the Brockton Rox (21-23) compiled twenty hits on their way to a 12-6 rout of the host Jackals (23-21). The loss eliminates New Jersey from first half playoff contention.
Each Rox starter hit safely in the contest, with only first baseman Craig Lewis and second baseman Andrew Salvo limited to one base hit. The final tally included 13 singles, four doubles, two triples, and one home run by outfielder Brad Rosenblat, a solo shot in the sixth that gave the rookie two for the season.
But it was New Jersey leaping out to the lead first against Brockton starter Grant Dorn, making his Rox debut after being acquired earlier in the day from Schaumberg of the Northern League. With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, lead-off hitter Zach Smithlin singled and Ricardo Cordova coaxed a walk. Sandy Madera (along with Smithlin, one of six Jackals named to the Can-Am All-Star game) launched a two-run double to give the home team the momentary advantage.
New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik, himself an All-Star, relinquished the lead in the top of the fifth as the Rox sent all nine members of their lineup to the plate. Jake Daubert and Rosenblat singled to start the inning. After Salvo struck out looking, Matt Cucurullo drove in Daubert with an RBI double. Saul Bustos followed with a two-run single, one of four hits compiled by the Rox shortstop in the game. Guye Senjem then whistled a line drive through the middle to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.
Brockton added to the deficit for the Jackals by rallying off four different relievers for one run in the sixth, three in the seventh, one in the eighth, and three more in the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Joe Jianetti's three-run homer off Brockton rookie Stephen Sloan climaxed a four-run rally to bring New Jersey within shouting range, but Tony Stutz came out of the bullpen to strike out Smithlin and end the game.
Dorn (1-0) allowed just four hits over eight innings to earn his first win in a Rox jersey. Pavlik (2-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on ten hits in five innings.
The two teams play the penultimate game of the first half Tuesday night at 7:05. Brockton sends Jon Koch (3-1, 2.98) to the mound against New Jersey All-Star Josh Brey (4-2, 2.81).
