July 11, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
SportsTicker, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has named New Jersey OF Zach Smithlin and North Shore RHP Ryan Bicondoa Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of July 4-10.
In eight games, Smithlin went 16-for-31, a .516 average, with two doubles, two triples and nine runs scored to lead the Jackals, who went 4-4 on the week and are now two games behind Worcester in the South Division. His best game of the week came on Sunday, when he went 4-for-4 with a triple and four runs scored in the Jackals' 14-2 romp over New Haven County. The Paterson, N.J. native is currently second in the league with a .372 average, first with 68 hits, second with 16 stolen bases and is tied for first with 41 runs scored.
Smithlin, 24, was signed as a nondrafted free agent out of Penn State by St. Louis in June 2003 and spent that season with the New Jersey Cardinals of the New York-Penn League. He moved on to the Jackals in 2004, hitting .300 with 52 runs scored in 81 games for the Northeast League champions.
Bicondoa dazzled in his two outings, twirling a complete-game one-hitter against first-place Quebec on Monday, striking out seven, and then throwing a seven-inning complete game against Brockton on Saturday, limiting the Rox to one run on eight hits while striking out five. The Riverton, Wyoming, native has a 4-3 record, is third in the Can-Am League with a 2.41 ERA and has pitched a league-leading four complete games.
The righthander was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the New York Yankees and spent the 2002 season at Staten Island of the New York-Penn League, where he led the league with a 1.90 ERA and was named to the league's post-season all-star team. Bicondoa, 26, started the 2003 season at Class A Tampa before being traded to the New York Mets organization in the deal that brought Armando Benitez to the Yankees. Last season, his first in independent baseball, he finished second in the Northeast League in saves for North Shore, going 1-5 with a 4.54 ERA.
