North Shore Spirit News Release

The North Shore Spirit pulled to within 1 ½ games of the division leading Quebec Capitales Monday night by beating the Elmira Pioneers 7-4.

With the win, the Spirit draw to within one game of Quebec in the all important loss column with only three games remaining in the first half of the season.

Alex Herrera went 5 2/3 to pick up the win and run his record to 4-0. Herrera allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out four. Jared Stuart (0-3) took the loss for the Pioneers.

Elmira opened the scoring in the second thanks to aggressive base running and shaky Spirit defense. With two on and one out, the Pioneers attempted a double steal. North Shore catcher Alex Trezza uncorked an errant throw, allowing both runners to score.

The Spirit would answer quickly with five runs of their own in the bottom of the third. After North Shore loaded the bases with no outs, Stuart would force home a run by hitting Rob Fischer on the elbow. The next batter, Vic Davilla, hit a slower roller to second that was booted by Jobu Morita, allowing Yuri Sanchez to score. Trezza followed with a line drive single to right, plating Marcos Agramonte and Fischer. The Spirit would increase their lead to 6-2 on a Brian Macchi sacrifice fly and a Carter RBI basehit.

The Pioneers chipped away at the deficit with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Jeremy Booth had an RBI double and Ryan Dorsey connected for his first homerun of the season, cutting the Spirit's lead to 6-4.

North Shore added and insurance run in the eighth. Sanchez singled and scored three batters later on a Chris Roque wild pitch.
