Records can be deceiving. Although the North Shore Spirit have been a .500 team thus far in the season, the team has many bright spots, ready to step up and help the team make a push for the playoffs.
Chris Farley and Matthew Bishop looked more like duel aces than their spots as the three and four starters in the Spirit rotation. Farley earned CanAm pitcher of the week honors (June 11-17) highlighted by a near unhittable performance against the CanAm Grays on June 13. The Grays only mustered two hits against Farley, as he struck out a season high 12 batters through 6 and 2/3 innings. On the season, Farley ranks amongst the league leaders in most pitching categories, compiling a 5-1 record, with a 1.46 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 37 innings.
Bishop has been just as steady as Farley this season. The right-hander from Raleigh, NC is sporting 4-2 record on the season to go along with a miniscule 0.94 ERA. Not a strikeout pitcher, Bishop induces a mixture of fly balls and groundballs, and relies on steady defense to keep other teams in check.
With a lingering injury to Bryan Morse, the Farley and Bishop combo look to lead the team toward the playoffs from the hill.
Many times, players bounce around from team to team while trying to catch the eye of major league scouts. This also includes jumping from one CanAm team to another. Such is the story of Mike Torres, the Spirit's offensive catalyst and consistent on-base threat.
Torres has bounced around between Brockton and Nashua in his career, and both teams would love to have his bat back this season. Torres has gotten a hit in all but five of his starts this season, with an impressive twelve multi-hit games. He has never hit above .300 to conclude a season, but his .357 batting average has him sitting fourth in the league in the category. Torres' consistency with the bat and the glove has made him one of, if not the biggest off-season addition for the Spirit.
Spirit Baseball Clinics
Young aspiring ballplayers have two chances this summer to be taught the fundamentals of baseball from North Shore Spirit manager Vic Davilla, as well as other members of the 2007 Spirit team. The North Shore Spirit Baseball Clinics will hold two sessions, one in July and the other in August.
Session 1 is on July 23, 24, 26, and 27. July 25 is the Spirit's only noon game of the season and kids who participate in this session get a free ticket to that game.
Session 2 is on August 6, 7, 8, 9. Kids who choose to participate in this session get themselves a free ticket to the August 9 game versus the Brockton Rox.
The ages for the clinics are 7 to 14. Each day goes from 8:30 to 12:30 in the afternoon. Spots are limited so be sure to sign up soon to guarantee your spot. The price for each session is $150 and includes instruction from the professional Spirit players, lunch every day, and a free ticket to the aforementioned games.
Sign-up sheets are available in the Spirit Management Office as well as Fan Services during the Spirit home games. Phone sign-ups are welcomed by calling the Spirit Office at 781-592-0007.
