North Shore Shuts Out Rox

Brockton, MA (June 28, 2007) -- North Shore RHP Ryan Bicondoa struck out 12 batters and allowed just three hits in a complete-game shutout as the Spirit beat the Rox 4-0 at Campanelli Stadium before a Thursday night crowd of 4,338. Bicondoa was dominant, at one point retiring 11 consecutive batters including seven of eight on strikeouts. He retired 20 of the final 22 batters of the game RHP Ari Kafka provided a bright spot for the Rox, pitching three shutout innings out of the bullpen while fanning five batters. In his last two appearances, Kafka has allowed just three baserunners while striking out 11 hitters. 1B Francisco Lebron extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a ninth-inning single.

LHP Rolando Viera started for the Rox after a 61-minute rain delay prior to the game. He stranded four runners on base in the first two innings but was unable to escape trouble in the third. LF Darren Blakely had a one-out RBI triple, his third three-bagger of the series, giving the Spirit a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, C Alex Trezza launched his second HR in as many nights, a two-run blast over the right-center wall putting the Spirit on top 3-0. SS Gilbert Gill capped the scoring with an RBI single off Viera, as the Spirit scored four in the third on six hits to take a 4-0 lead.

Neither team scored the rest of the way. After putting the first two runners on in the third, Bicondoa induced a double play and a strikeout to begin a streak of 11 consecutive batters retired in the middle of the game. He struck out five straight batters in the fourth and fifth innings. No Rox runner reached second base after the third inning as Bicondoa cruised to 113-pitch shutout in a Spirit victory and series win over the Rox.

Friday, the Rox begin a six-game road trip to take on the New Jersey Jackals and the Sussex Skyhawks, starting with a 7:05 contest with the first-place Jackals Friday evening. RHP Luis Carreras (5-1, 3.58 ERA) makes the start for the Rox.
