Cutters Drop Opening Game of Series to Grays
July 11, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters began their final series off the first half on a down note, dropping Monday night's game to the Can-Am League Grays 9-6. It was a weird sight, seeing the Cutters bat in the visitor's half all evening, as the game was played at Yale Field, but featured the Grays as the home team.
The Cutters used first licks at the plate to their advantage getting off to a fast start. In the first at bat of the game, Cutters leadoff man Keto Anderson tripled off the wall in right centerfield. He was driven in by a Bill Peavey sacrifice fly later in the inning. It would be the first of two three-baggers hit by the speedy centerfielder.
In what was to be a back and forth game, the Grays immediately responded, coincidentally with a triple of their own. All-Star second baseman B.J. Weed ripped a triple that scored Greg Strickland who had led off the Grays' half with a single. Weed would not be on the bases for long, as player/coach Mark Burke drove him home with a one-bagger, giving the home team a 2-1 lead. A gritty Cutters team would scrape runs across in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the Grays countered ruthlessly every time the Cutters managed to score, putting up three runs in the sixth and a pair in both the seventh and eighth, building an insurmountable 9-5 lead. A sole Cutters run in the ninth would bring the score to its final run total.
Anderson and Peavey were the major offensive contributors for New Haven County. To go along with two triples, Anderson added two singles and crossed the plate three times. Peavey blasted his eighth home run of the season, a solo job to left center. It was his second RBI of the game.
The Grays were impressive at the plate all night, pounding out 16 hits. Weed, Burke and Alex Garcia each had three hits. Garcia, not to be outdone by Anderson, added two triples of his own.
Game two of the three game set is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:05. Jarrett Stawarz (3-4) takes the mound for the visiting Cutters. The Grays send Roberto Nieves (2-3) to the hill.
