Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MAâ The Rox (25-14) were dealt a 12-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon by the traveling Aces (7-32). The Aces picked up the first series win in the team's first season of existence, and in the process handed the Rox their fourth series loss in a row.
The Aces came at the Rox right from the start. After Coby Smith doubled to right-center field, J. P. Schmidt hit a ground ball toward Hector Henriquez at second base. Henriquez could not make the play, and Smith scored on the error. The inning continued downhill when Chad Gambill singled to put two runners on base. Yohanny Valera picked up his first RBI of the game on a ground out that scored J. P. Schmidt, and Mike Davis followed with a two-run home run to put the Aces up 5-0 after the first inning.
The Aces added to their lead in the second inning with another home run. Jutt Hileman took Rox starter Scott Martin deep to left field on the first pitch of the inning to extend the Aces lead, 6-0.
In the third inning, the offensive display from the Aces continued. Al Corbiel doubled to left-center field. Valera followed with another double to notch his second RBI of the contest. Greg Schmidt hit the Aces third home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field to put the Aces up 8-0.
The Aces added a ninth run in the fourth inning when Smith, who got on base after being hit by a pitch, scored on J. P. Schmidt's triple. In the bottom half of the inning, the Rox finally got on the board. Jake Daubert walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Francisco Matos singled to move Daubert to third base and Brian Jones brought him home with a single to left field. The Rox would only slightly cut into the Aces lead as they could not procure any more runs and trailed, 9-1.
The Aces scored one more run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Hileman singled to bring home Davis. In the sixth, Davis singled to bring home Corbiel. The Aces were finally held off the board in the top of the seventh inning.
The seventh inning was also notable for a spectacular diving catch by Kris Zacuto in foul territory that retired Chad Gambill. After seven the Aces were up by double digits, 11-1.
The Aces added their 12th run of the game in the top of the ninth inning when Smith singled home Hileman. The Rox did threaten in the bottom of the ninth. Zacuto singled to lead off the inning. Ben Beck got his first at-bat since rejoining the team yesterday and singled to put two runners on. After Abner Arroyo walked to load the bases, Brett Winn reached on a fielder's choice that scored Zacuto. The Rox were unable to get any more runs ending the game with the Aces on top, 12-2.
Martin (4-2) picked up the loss going two and two-thirds innings while allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits. Josh Neitz (1-1) picked up the win for the Aces.
The Rox now embark on a seven-game road trip to end the first half. The trip starts with a 7:05 p.m. game in Quebec on Thursday Night.
