New Haven County Cutters News Release
West Haven, CT- The New Haven County Cutters (20-19) got ahead early but could not hold on to beat the Bangor Lumberjacks (21-18), who took the series deciding game 6-3 at Yale Field.
The Cutters grabbed the lead in the first on a passed ball that got away from Brad Hargreaves with Jose Mateo scoring from third base and Jimmy Hurst advancing to second. Hector Lebron followed with a single putting runners on the corners with one out.. New Haven couldn't plate anymore runs as Kevin Forbes bounced into an inning ending double play.
Cutters Starter Wes Mindingall, making his fourth professional start, got roughed up in the third inning. After a Jake Whitesides leadoff solo homer, Brad Hargreaves and Donnie Ross followed with consecutive singles. Derry Hammond drove a 2-1 offering into the gap clearing the bases with a 2 RBI double.
The Cutters loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the third and the 3-4-5 hitters in line to bat. New Haven was only able to score one run on a bounce out to first from Hector Lebron. The Cutters stranded six runners on base in the game.
New Haven cut it to 4-3 in the fourth on an RBI single by PJ Johnston but that would be as close as the Cutters would come. Johnston went 3-for-4 in the loss with an RBI and a run scored.
The Bangor bullpen threw 5 1/3 innings of one hit baseball to shut the Cutters down.
The 2-3-4 spots of the Lumberjack lineup went 6-for-11 with four runs scored and 2 RBI
Jose Mateo went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with a run scored.
The Cutters lead in the South Division is 1 1/2 games with seven games to play in the first half.
