Brockton Rox News Release
West Haven, CT (August 28, 2007) - LHP Rolando Viera delivered his eleventh consecutive quality start to win his eleventh game and the Brockton Rox used two big innings to beat the New Haven County Cutters 11-4 at Yale Field in West Haven, CT. The Rox scored four runs in the fifth and five in the eighth in the win. DH John Allen had a three-hit game for the Rox as did 1B Francisco Lebron, who drove in a pair of runs. 3B Andre Alvarado ripped a two-run single in the fourth inning to put the Rox on the scoreboard in the fourth and they never trailed. The victory gives the Rox their first season- series win over a Can-Am League opponent as Brockton has won eight of eleven games against the Cutters this season. With a 40-47 record overall and 20-21 in the second half, the Rox have just six games left in the 2007 season.
Each team had just one hit through the first three innings as RHP Trevor Marcotte, the Cutters's starter, dominated the Rox with five strikeouts through three. In the fourth, both 1B Francisco Lebron and Allen singled to put runners at first and second to open the inning. With one out, LF Jerod Edmondson singled to left to load the bases for Alvarado. Alvarado, who entered the game as a defensive replacement for injured 3B Melvin Falu in the third inning, smoked a two-run single through the left side to give the Rox the first runs of the game.
The Cutters got a run back in the fourth on a triple by LF Jeremy Pickrel and an RBI single by 1B Chris Gaskin, but Viera stranded the bases and the Cutters got no closer than trailing 2-1. In the fifth, the Rox plated four runs with two outs in the frame, using RBI doubles by Lebron, Allen, Edmondson, and two Cutters errors to take a 8-2 lead. In the eighth, the Rox capitalized on four walks issued by the Cutters bullpen to score five additional runs and take an 11-2 lead. New Haven County SS Chas Terni homered off RHP Jon Koch to make it 11-4 in the bottom of the eighth, but RHP Luis Carreras pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the win for the Rox.
Viera's 11th win ties him with P Brian Buchanan (2004) for the single- season Rox win record. In addition to Lebron, Allen, and Edmondson, 2B Alex Nunez and SS Jorge Mejia added multi-hit games for the Rox in the win. Wednesday, LHP Bryan Morse (4-5, 4.52 ERA) takes the hill for the Rox against LHP Kevin Culpepper (1-4, 4.02 ERA) in Game 2 of the four-game series, starting at 7:05 PM.
