Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- Mike MacMillan grounded an RBI single to rightfield with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, as the Worcester Tornadoes picked up their 7th walkoff win of the season, 2-1, over the Sussex Skyhawks at Hanover Insurance Park on Tuesday night.
The game featured a great pitcher's duel between Worcester righty Ryan Mitchell and Sussex lefty Vince Davis. The Tornadoes scored the game's first run on a two-out RBI single to center by Omar Pena in the 3rd inning, to take a 1-0 lead. Mitchell tossed 6 shutout frames before giving way to Eddie Pena to start the 7th. But Pena walked the leadoff man, Jared Lemieux, on four pitches, then gave up a single to Tom Terrill. A popout and a fielder's choice left men at the corners with two outs for former Worcester third baseman Brian Rios. Rios hit a liner off of Eddie Pena's glove that rolled out near shortstop for an infield RBI single that tied the game, 1-1.
The game stayed tied into the bottom of the 9th inning, when Yohanny Valera drew a one-out walk from righty Dayle Campbell (0-3). Valera moved to second base on a passed ball and took third on an infield groundout. Andrew Wishy was intentionally walked to bring Mike MacMillan to the plate. MacMillan then grounded an opposite field single to right to plate Valera with the game-winner.
Shaun McNamara (3-5) pitched a scoreless top of the 9th for the win and Campbell (0-3) took the loss. The walkoff hit was the first as a professional for MacMillan and the Tornadoes 7th walkoff win of the season. Worcester also has 7 walkoff losses. MacMillan also extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games. It is now the longest active hitting streak on the team, as Dominic Ramos' league-high and Tornadoes franchise-record 17-game hitting streak came to an end as the second baseman went 0-4. The Tornadoes will try to make it two in a row on Wednesday night when they send righty Alex Pena to the mound in Game Two of their four-game series with Sussex. The Skyhawks will counter with righty Ryan Dittfurth. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
