Rox can't hold late lead and fall 5-4 to New Haven County

WEST HAVEN, CT-New Haven County scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against RHP Kyle George to take their first lead of the game as the Rox fell 5-4 to the Cutters at Yale Field in the second game of a three-game series. The Rox have lost the first two games of the series and four in a row overall. The Rox had leads of 3-0 and 4-3 but twice lost leads and eventually the game. 1B Francisco Lebron homered for the Rox and DH Guye Senjem had two RBI in the loss. RHP John Kelly did not get a decision, allowing three runs in seven inning with eight strikeouts in a quality start. The Rox fall to 19-16 in the second half and 43-38 overall.

The Rox scored two unearned runs off New Haven County RHP Courtney Hall in the third inning. SS Mike Scanzano drove home the game's first run with an RBI double to left, and Senjem plated 3B Zach Strong with a one-out groundout to give the Rox a 2-0 advantage. In the fifth, Senjem shot a double past first base and into the right field corner, plating LF Eugene Julien from second to make it 3-0 Rox. Kelly dominated the first six innings, allowing just three hits including two bunt singles.

In the seventh, the Cutters tied the game. Former Rox RHP Orlando Encarnacion, playing RF for New Haven County, doubled home a pair and scored on a CF Marcus Nettles double later in the frame. While the game was tied at three heading into the eighth, the tie was short- lived. Lebron crushed his seventh HR of the season leading off the eighth, a blast over the wall in left to put the Rox back in front 4-3.

In the eighth, DH Derrick Gibson singled and scored on 1B D.J. Boston's RBI double to open the frame. With Boston at third and the game tied at four, a passed ball allowed Boston to score and New Haven County to take their first lead. RHP Andy Weimer pitched a scoreless ninth for his 16th save. Tomorrow the Rox send RHP Wayne Lundgren (2-4, 3.31 ERA) to the mound to face New Haven County RHP Justin Knoff (7-5, 4.02 ERA) in the final game of a three-game series at 7:05 PM at Yale Field.
