New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ The New Jersey Jackals offense couldn't support Mike Vicaro in his first professional start, as they lost a heartbreaker to North Shore, 2-1. Despite only tallying three-hits, the Spirit took advantage of numerous Jackal mistakes, both mental and physical, to pick up the win.

After threatening in the first inning, and coming up empty, the Jackals were fortunate in the second. Following a one out double by Alex Fernandez, Clay Kuklick tapped one out in front of the plate, and catcher Alex Trezza tossed the ball into foul ground down the right field line. It allowed Fernandez to score, and it gave the Jackals a 1-0 lead.

New Jersey starter Mike Viccaro cruised through his first four innings of work, but he ran into Trezza in the fifth, and got redemption for his early error. Trezza launched a ball over the right field wall to tie the score at one.

In the sixth, the Spirit took their first lead off the game thanks to a few New Jersey miscues. Reliever Joe Orloski hit Rob Fischer to lead off the inning. He then advanced to second on a passed ball, and to third on a Wilton Veras error. With one out, Ricardo Cordova grounded out sharply to first base, allowing Fischer to score. With New Jersey's sluggish offense, it was enough to secure the victory.

The Jackals had their chances in this ballgame, but they simply couldn't score runs. They grounded into three double plays, one of them in the crucial ninth inning with the tying run aboard and no outs.

The win went to Jared Trout. He was more than solid in six innings of work. He allowed one run, no earned runs, on six hits. Kevin Fitzgerald worked a strong ninth inning for his 20th save of the year.

The loss went to New Jersey's Joe Orloski despite allowing an unearned run in the sixth. Mike Vicaro stomached a no decision, while being fantastic in his first start. In five innings, he allowed just one earned run, on three hits, while striking out eight.
