New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - After posting just a base hit and two bunt singles through six innings, the New Haven County Cutters (20-15, 44-35) overcame a 3-0 deficit in the seventh inning and a 4-3 deficit in the eighth to defeat the Brockton Rox (19-16, 43-38) 5-4, Wednesday night, in the second of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field and extend their Wild Card lead to two games in the Can-Am League.
First baseman D.J. Boston turned a 4-3 Rox' lead into a 5-4 Cutters advantage in the eighth inning when he doubled home designated Derrick Gibson from first base and later scored on a pass ball.
The Cutters' offense broke out of its slumber in the seventh inning when they rallied for three runs to tie the score, 3-3.
Right fielder Orlando Encarnacion laced a two-run double down the left field line and centerfielder Marcus Nettles later followed with an RBI double to produce the three-run frame.
The Rox answered right back in the top of the eighth inning when first baseman Francisco Lebron led off the frame with a tremendous home run (11) off the left field score board to make it a 4-3 game.
The Rox took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when a fielding error allowed two unearned runs to score. Shortstop Mike Scanzano doubled home one run and an RBI fielder's choice put the Cutters in a 2-0 hole.
Back-to-doubles from left fielder Eugene Julien and designated hitter Guye Senjem in the fifth inning extended the Rox' lead to 3-0.
Cutters' starter RHP Courtney Hall (3-4) allowed two earned runs on eight hits and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts in 8.0 innings to earn the win. RHP Andy Weimer closed the door in the ninth inning to pick up the save (16).
RHP John Kelly started for the Rox and cruised through the first six innings, overall allowing three runs on six hits in 7.0 innings in a no decision.
Rox' reliever Kyle George (2-3) was victimized for the Cutters' game-tying and winning runs in the eighth inning as he took the loss.
The Cutters look for the three-game sweep Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
RHP Justin Knoff (7-5, 4.02 ERA) will start for the Cutters with the Rox sending RHP Wayne Lundgren (2-4, 3.31 ERA) to the hill.
