Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (51-55) were outdueled 3-1 by the Reno Aces (53-53) on Saturday night at Dell Diamond.
Round Rock starter RHP Chris Rowley (0-1, 5.40) was solid in a losing effort, tossing 5.0 innings of three-run ball on eight hits and two walks while striking out five in his Express debut. Aces reliever LHP Anthony Vasquez (7-4, 4.98) took home the win after allowing a run on two hits over 4.0 frames.
Reno plated their first two runs off Rowley in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. C Anthony Recker led off the frame with a double before LF Cesar Puello drove the Aces backstop home on a two-bagger of his own. With two outs, SS Kristopher Negron punched a single to center that brought Puello in from second.
In the fifth, Reno utilized three singles to push the gap to 3-0. 2B Juniel Querecuto laced the first base knock to left, advanced to second when 3B Kevin Cron dropped a blooper in front of Round Rock CF Drew Robinson, and eventually scored after Fuentes pushed a ground ball through the hole between first and second.
With Vasquez taking over on the mound for Aces starter RHP Matt Koch to start the fifth, Round Rock's bats pounced for their first and only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth to trim the gap to 3-1. After Vasquez retired the first two batters in the side, Express LF Franklin Rollin extended the frame when he reached base on an infield single. Rollin then recorded his first Triple-A stolen base to advance to second, and later scored on SS Cliff Pennington's double to left.
Although they weren't factored into the decision, Round Rock relievers RHP Deolis Guerra and RHP Ricardo Rodriguez teamed up to shutout Reno's offense in the later innings. Guerra finished his 2.0-inning appearance with three strikeouts, a walk, and one hit allowed, while Rodriguez racked up four punchouts in the eighth and ninth.
For Guerra, the scoreless showing extends his stretch of consecutive shutout innings to 9.1, the longest such stretch of 2018 for the right-hander.
The E-Train will transform into the Round Rock Chupacabras for Sunday night's matchup with the Aces at Dell Diamond. Round Rock LHP Michael Roth (5-3, 4.45) is scheduled to start on the mound opposite of Reno RHP Jake Buchanan (7-8, 5.43). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. CDT.
