SACRAMENTO, CA - Mark Zagunis powered the effort with a 3-for-5 game and three RBI as the Iowa Cubs (38-66) secured a 4-2 victory over the Sacramento River Cats (43-62), Friday at Raley Field.

A two-run blast from Zagunis busted the scoreless game in the fourth as Stephen Bruno had drawn a leadoff walk to add to the impact. The River Cats responded immediately in the bottom of the frame as Chris Shaw powered a solo shot to cut Iowa's lead in half.

The I-Cubs kept their distance as Bijan Rademacher roped an RBI single to open the fifth, moved to third on a Chris Coghlan single, and was brought in on a sacrifice fly from Bruno. The River Cats stayed within striking distance as they added a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as a bases-loaded hit by pitch pushed in a runner.

Iowa was able to add insurance in the eighth as Zagunis tabbed his third hit and third RBI of the game, bringing in Coghlan on a double after he drew a one-out walk.

The River Cats threatened with two base runners in the eighth against Rob Zastryzny, but the potential rally was shut down in time.

Trevor Clifton (2-2) gave Iowa 5.0 innings, holding Sacramento to two runs on six hits to earn the win. Tyler Herb (1-3) took the loss as Dillon Maples bagged his eighth save of the season.

The I-Cubs and River Cats meet for game two of the set tomorrow with a 9:05 p.m. CT first pitch at Raley Field. Follow the action on AM 940 or www.iowacubs.com.
