FRISCO, Texas - The Frisco RoughRiders rallied in the ninth inning but dropped a 3-2 decision to the Springfield Cardinals on Thursday night in front of 6,060 fans at Riders Field.
Springfield (34-32) took a 3-0 lead after scoring runs in the third and fourth innings. Frisco (28-37) threatened in multiple innings down the stretch but only got one run in the sixth and ninth innings. Kellen Strahm singled and scored in the ninth to make it a one-run game. Scott Kapers had the RBI on his single, Jax Biggers pinch ran and got to second on a wild pitch but was stranded there.
Andre Granillo pitched the ninth inning with one run allowed for the save. Logan Gragg (2-4) went six innings with one run conceded for the win. Ryan Garcia (2-6) allowed three runs in 3.1 innings to suffer the loss.
Strahm's single extended his hitting streak to 12 games, while Thomas Saggese upped his streak to 11 games on Thursday night. He doubled in the first inning, singled for an RBI in the sixth, and also drew a walk. His base hit scored Luisangel Acuña, who had singled earlier in the inning.
The Frisco bullpen kept the game close, totaling 5.2 innings without a run. Alex Speas entered with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning, allowed just one run on a fielder's choice and struck out the next batter on a 102-mile-an-hour fastball.
Justin Slaten followed with two scoreless innings, including three strikeouts. Theo McDowell pitched a hitless eighth inning and Antoine Kelly put up a zero in the ninth.
Springfield returns to Riders Field on Friday, June 23rd at 7:05 p.m. for the fourth game of the six-game set. RHP Jack Leiter (2-3, 4.03 ERA) will start for the 14th time for Frisco, countered by RHP Edgar Escobar (7-2, 4.00 ERA).
