
Flying Chanclas' Comeback Attempt Falls Short on Thursday

SAN ANTONIO - The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio returned to Wolff Stadium on Thursday night to take on the Midland RockHounds. After trailing 5-0, the Flying Chanclas fought back to tie things up at 6-6 in the sixth inning. In a back-and-forth contest, Midland took a 10-6 advantage. San Antonio never gave in and nearly completed the comeback in the ninth inning. However, Midland prevailed with a 10-8 final.
Nolan Watson was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas. The RockHounds offense got off to a hot start with four runs in the top of the first inning. Lawrence Butler began the ballgame with a base hit. Brett Harris drove in Butler with a double to right field. Greg Deichmann singled to put two runners on base. Denzel Clarke drove in Harris with a sacrifice fly. After striking out the next batter, Watson allowed a two-run home run to Shane McGuire. Midland took a 4-0 lead.
Jack Perkins was the starting pitcher for the RockHounds. San Antonio threatened to score in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs in the frame, Juan Fernandez was hit by a pitch and the inning was extended. The Chanclas loaded the bases after a catcher's interference and a walk. Pedro Castellanos popped out and left the bases loaded.
Midland added an insurance run in the top of the third inning. Leading off the frame, Deichmann left the yard for his 10th home run of the season. Midland improved their lead to 5-0.
San Antonio plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Ripken Reyes and Daniel Johnson hit back-to-back singles to start the frame. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a groundout from Fernandez. Reyes came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Michael De La Cruz. On the play, Johnson was ruled out after an appeal stating that he failed to tag up in time. The Flying Chanclas trailed 5-1.
The Flying Chanclas continued to fight back after scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cole Cummings began the inning with a base hit. Pedro Castellanos drove in Cummings with a double to left-center field. On the play, he reached third base on a fielding error from Clarke. He came in to score on a passed ball from McGuire. San Antonio trailed 5-3.
Midland used the long ball to plate their sixth run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Leading off the frame, Butler hit his ninth home run of the season. The RockHounds improved their lead to 6-3.
The Flying Chanclas evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cummings and Castellanos began the frame with back-to-back singles. Brian Howard took over on the mound for Perkins. Connor Hollis singled and drove in Cummings. Chandler Seagle drove in two runs with a double to left field. The game was tied 6-6.
Midland regained the lead after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Facing Brian Gonzalez, Joshwan Wright and Sahid Valenzuela both hit singles. The southpaw struck out Butler before issuing a walk to Brett Harris. Gonzalez walked Deichmann and Wright came in to score. Clarke drove in two runs with a base hit to left field. Jason Blanchard took over for Gonzalez. McGuire drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. San Antonio trailed 10-6.
Austin Briggs took the mound for Midland in the bottom of the ninth inning. Reyes started the frame with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Johnson reached base on a fielding error. Fernandez was hit by a pitch and the Flying Chanclas loaded the bases. De La Cruz drove in two runs with a single to left field. Cummings flew out for the first out of the frame. Castellanos struck out swinging for out number two. On the play, both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Midland RockHounds on Friday, June 23rd. Left-hander Daniel Camarena (1-3, 9.11) is scheduled to pitch for the Missions. Right-hander Joey Estes (4-5, 3.41) is scheduled to pitch for the RockHounds. Wednesday's first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Nelson Wolff Stadium.
