The Rotary Clubs of Hernando and Southaven recently capped off an evening of fun and fundraising at a RiverKings hockey game, playing games of "friendly competition" on the ice and ultimately earning almost $1,500 for their scholarship funds through RiverKings fundraising.

The event was the third part of a 3-part series. The two clubs competed to see who could pick up the most trash, who could gather the most food for needy families in a Thanksgiving food drive, and ultimately, which club could raise the most money for scholarships.

"The most enjoyable piece for us as Rotarians lies in the fact that this challenge promoted and implemented community service projects," Southaven Rotary President Ford Moore said. "And we greatly appreciate the Mississippi RiverKings for partnering with the Southaven and Hernando Rotary Club's Rotary Challenge.

"We are very proud of our results," said Moore on Thursday, grinning, when Hernando Rotarian Whitley Rives conceded the victory to Southaven's 50 members and presented them a check of $1,018 for their efforts - $918 of which was earned through selling RiverKings tickets to the Feb. 29 game, and $100 of which was donated to Southaven Rotary Club by the RiverKings organization in recognition of their winning ways. The Hernando Club, with just 30 members, raised $462.

"Of course, it was great fun teaming up with Southaven to get our members involved in community projects," Hernando Rotary President Brian Goff said. "Ultimately, though, the real winners were our communities.

"Through the efforts of our clubs, we were able to beautify and reduce litter on Hwy. 51, help the Interfaith Food Pantry and the Samaritans organization to stock their pantries with much needed items for disadvantaged families, and to help our local students in Hernando and Southaven pursue their goals of higher education. Nothing could be more fulfilling than that."

The two organizations were also able to cross-promote upcoming fundraisers during the RiverKings game, such as the 2008 Crawfish Countdown presented by Southaven Rotary at Snowden Grove April 24th from 5-9 p.m. Major sponsors include the City of Southaven, The Grove coffee shop, The Pig, and Mesquite Chop House.

Another goal of the partnership with the RiverKings was to promote membership in Rotary. In Rotary, individuals pledge to uphold the values of truth, fairness, and building goodwill and better friendships among all parties involved in an action, whether in business or private life.

And of course, there was the spirit competition on the ice at the game, in which members raced down the ice in a relay - putting on pieces of hockey equipment, shooting pucks into the goal, and finally, the Fazoli's Breadstick Eating Competition. Southaven won by two bites of a Fazoli's breadstick.

While Rives good-naturedly declared the Southaven Club the winner at Southaven's weekly meeting, she did leave a challenge on the floor to Moore and the club: "The winners - until next year," she said. "It's on."
