March 14, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Youngstown Steelhounds 3-2 Friday night, in front of 3,372 fans at the Chevrelet Centre.
The loss snapped the Bucks three game overall winning streak, and their five-game road winning streak. Laredo's overall record now stands at 39-18-3 (81 points), and their magic number for clinching the number one seed in the Southern Conference playoffs remains at three as of press time. Arizona was facing off with Amarillo just as the Bucks game ended Friday night.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the third period, Youngstown's Peter Pohl poked in a rebound in the crease past Bucks goaltender Dustin Traylen on the power-play. Traylen was laid out in the crease trying to smother but Pohl snuck it by. It was Pohl's 24th tally of the season.
Trailing 3-2, the Bucks pulled Traylen for the final 1:28 of the game to gain an extra attacker, but the Steelhounds killed off the clock to pick up the win. With the victory Youngstown (35-19-5, 75 points) temporarily moves into the third playoff spot in the North.
The Bucks jumped out in front on the power-play just 3:52 into the game. Jeff Bes played the puck in the left corner of the Steelhounds end. Bes sent a pass towards the slot, and it hit Steelhounds goaltender Andy Franck in the back and deflected into the net. It was Bes 44th goal of the season, with Andrew Desjardins picking up his 35th assist.
Youngstown tied the game up at 1-1 9:02 into the first period, when Jason Baird took a pass at the bottom of the left circle from Chris Richards and sent a wrister past Traylen. Baird, a former Corpus Christi Ray, tallied his 12th goal of the season.
Laredo would re-take the lead 2-1 with 6:39 left in the first period, when Chris Stanley took a pass from Bes at the high slot, and sent a rifle slap shot past Franck. It was Stanley's first CHL goal in his Laredo debut, with Bes picking up his team-leading 58th assist and 102nd point.
Laredo outshot Youngstown in the first 20 minutes nine-to-seven.
The Bucks (16-11-2 on the road) penalty kill would be tested in the second period, when they were forced to kill off a Steelhounds five-on-three advantage for 1:08. Laredo did just that, with Traylen making two very big saves on the penalty kill, including one where he was compltely on his back with two Steelhounds trying to poke it in.
Youngstown (16-8-3 at home) would tie the game up on the power-play with 3:26 left in the second period. Steve Burnstill sent a slap shot past Traylen from the right point.
The Bucks were outshot 11-3 in the second period, with Youngstown controlling much of the play.
Laredo was outshot in the game 21-19.
Traylen took the loss in net, as he set aside 18 of the Steelhounds 21 shots. Franck picked up the win as he stopped 17 of 19 Laredo attempts.
James Hiebert did not play Friday night, his status is unknown for the rest of the weekend.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 6:05pm, and again on Sunday afternoon at 3:05pm.
