March 14, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The Corpus Christi Rayz rode a second period flurry past the Odessa Jackalopes for a 4-2 win on Friday Night from the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas. The victory for the Rayz was the third straight over the Jacks and is their fourth victory in the five games. The win increased the Rayz record to 21-31-7 for 49 points on the year, and kept pace with the Austin Ice Bats, five out of the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. The Rayz continue their four-game week with their final regular season home game on Saturday Night. It's IceRays Appreciation Night, presented by Cintas at 7:05pm vs. the Texas Brahmas. Tickets are on sale starting at just $12. For more info, call the Rayz at 361.814.PUCK. Odessa struck first when Sebastien Thinel scored on a screened wrist shot from the right circle that went through the legs of Jason Tapp on a Jacks power play at 5:18. The Rayz then thought they had tied it on a power play of their own. A puck was dedirected off a Jackalopes skate and slid towards the goal line. The puck was stopped near the line and the goal light came on. However, referee Zac Wiebe ruled the puck never crossed the line and waved off the goal. Later in the frame, another break went against the Rayz, when Adam Hogg kicked a puck, then redirected it with his stick into the Odessa net, but Wiebe disallowed the goal after a misinterpretation of the rule. A goal cannot be scored off a kicked puck, but if it's then redirected into the net, it should be counted. The ruling kept the Rayz trailing 1-0 and that remained the score into first intermission.

In the second period, the Rayz turned the tied with three goals in under six minutes. Justin Quenneville got the first Rayz goal on a power play at 4:09 off a feed from behind the net from former Jacks forward Jay Latulippe. The Rayz then took their first lead at 8:08 when Adam Powell snapped a shot into the top left corner from the top of the right circle. Corpus made it 3-1 shortly after when Adam Hogg banked a shot off the back of Odessa netminder Alexandre Vincent and into the net for an unassisted, shorthanded goal at 9:35. The Jacks outshot the Rayz 13-10 in the period, but the Rayz took a 3-1 lead into the final frame.

The Rayz widened the lead with a Chris Shaffer goal at 2:25 of the third to make the score 4-1. Odessa got back within two when Oliver Proulx tallied at 9:18, but that's as close as the Jacks would come. The Rayz held on for their third straight win over Odessa and first road win since Jan. 20th.

The Rayz were outshot by the Jacks 37-24. Corpus Christi went 1 for 4 on the power play and Odessa went 1 for 4. Jason Tapp earned the win for the Rayz, improving to 21-26-6, and made 35 saves on 37 shots. Vincent made 20 saves on 24 shots, suffering the loss and falling to 20-11-4.

The Rayz are proud to be celebrating a decade of hoc
