Roosters hang on for win

Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters won 3-2 Friday night over the Mid-Missouri Mavericks, taking the rubber match of the series. Both teams had great starting performances, but the Roosters won in the end. Richmond has now won four straight series since losing two games out of three to the Florence Freedom.

Richmond opened the scoring in the second inning when Gerald Miller singled with the bases loaded to score Kiley Vaughn. Dick Daly, Jr. scored another run when he came home on a sacrifice fly by Nate Gravley to give the Roosters a 2-0 lead. The score became 3-0 in the third when Daly doubled down the right field line to score Kevin White.

Mid-Missouri got on the board in the fifth when Brett Winn hit a towering shot to right field for a solo home run. The Mavericks got even closer in the seventh when Dusty Hillman hit a solo homer of his own to get Mid-Missouri to within a run at 3-2. Jesen Merle and Kris Regas combined to pitch a scoreless ninth however to get the series win for Richmond. Matt Schweitzer (6-5) got the win after pitching seven innings; while Nick Renault (6-5) pitched eight innings got get the loss. Regas (2) was credited with the save.

The Roosters (33-33) will begin a three-game road trip on Saturday, traveling to River City to play the Rascals. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. (Indiana time). Danny Bonilla (0-0, 11.57 ERA) is scheduled to start for Richmond. The Roosters will return home on Tuesday, August 9 for a three-game set against the Ohio Valley Redcoats.
