November 3, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â The Fresno Falcons enjoy taking their frustrations out on the Idaho Steelheads. After losing only their second game of the season the night before, the Falcons rebounded to destroy the Steelheads, 6-2, Saturday night in front of 6,514 fans at Selland Arena. Falcons rookie forward Colin Embley collected his first professional hat trick and Joe Frederick chipped in a goal and two assists.
Fresno scored the first goal of the game when Frederick netted his third tally of the season midway through the first period for the 1-0 lead. Austin de Luis increased Fresno's lead to 2-0 with his third goal of the season less than two minutes later. Idaho responded with a power play goal of their own at the 16:52 mark of the period to make it a one-goal game, but that would be the closest the Steelheads would get.
Embley started his goal eruption at the end of the first period when he scored the first of his three goals on the evening with just over a minute left in the period. After Porter's power play goal midway through the second period gave the Falcons a 4-1 lead, Embley tacked on his second goal of the game at the 16:35 mark of the second period. The hat trick was completed in the opening minutes of the third period with his power play goal at the 3:32 mark that put the Falcons out in front 6-1. Idaho chipped in a goal towards the end of the period, but the game was already decided at that point.
The Falcons shined on special teams tonight, scoring three power play goals in their four opportunities. They also killed off eight of the Steelheads 10 power play chances. Terry Friesen was solid in net for the Falcons, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced, including 18 in the second period alone. The Steelheads did outshoot the Falcons 32-27, including an 18-4 margin in the second period.
With the win, the Falcons move their record to 5-2-0 with 10 points, but remain in third place in the West Coast Hockey League standings, one point behind the San Diego Gulls. They are now within five points of the Steelheads for top billing in the standings with four games in hand.
The team will return to the ice on Monday, Nov. 4, when the Anchorage Aces return to Selland Arena for a 7 p.m. start. Monday's game will also be the first Guys Night Out, sponsored by Coors Light and New Rock 104. Tickets are on sale now at the Selland Arena box office, all Ticketmaster locations, or on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.
