Rocky Mountain Rage Weekly Update

February 11, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Feb. 5 @ Tulsa Oilers, 4-2 Loss - The Rage ended a season-long, seven-game road trip with a loss in Tulsa, giving the club a 2-4-1 record over the road swing. After Rocky Mountain took a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes, the Oilers chipped away at the deficit before finally taking a lead with under three minutes to play in regulation. The Rage then gave-up an empty-net goal for the final score.

Feb. 8 vs. Arizona Sundogs, 4-3 Loss - Again Rocky Mountain jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period only to see the opposition come from behind. Arizona rattled off four straight goals before the Rage pulled back within one with under two minutes to play. When the buzzer sounded, though, the team's first home game since Jan. 22 ended in defeat, snapping a team-record six-game home-winning streak that dated back to Dec. 29.

Feb. 9 vs. Odessa Jackalopes, 4-2 Loss - The Rage tried a different approach in this one, albeit to no avail. Rather than taking a 2-0 lead like in their previous two losses, they instead fell behind, 3-0. The deficit proved too much to overcome despite launching a season-high 48 shots on goal.

RAGE BATTLE SEASON'S FIRST LOSING SKID

Friday's setback to Arizona marked the first time all season that the Rage lost a second consecutive game in regulation. The two-game slide of course then grew into a three-game losing streak on Saturday. Rocky Mountain has not found the win column since a 5-3 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Feb. 2. The team still begins the week with the league's second best record behind only the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, who have now lost two straight after earning points in 24 consecutive games.

FRONT RANGE RIVALRY

This week's home-and-home set against the Colorado Eagles carries big ramifications in the race for the Northwest Division title as Colorado has crept within five points of Rocky Mountain in the standings. A sweep by the Rage extends their division lead back to nine points while two wins in regulation by the Eagles pulls the defending President's Cup Champions within a single point with one game in hand. Tuesday and Wednesday's tilts mark the seventh and eighth games in the rivals' 12-game season series, which Rocky Mountain leads with a record of 4-1-1. The clubs clash twice more in home-and-home sets on Feb. 23-24 and March 11-12.

PINK IN THE RINK

Rage fans raised more than $20,000 for the Broomfield Event Center Foundation of which more than 10% will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Metro Denver Affiliate following Friday's Breast Cancer Awareness Jersey Auction. To draw attention to the fight against breast cancer and to honor those whose lives have been affected by the disease, the team wore black jerseys with pink trim against the Sundogs. Daymen Rycroft and Chip Dunleavy (both of whom scored goals), as well as goaltenders Scott Reid and Terry Dunbar all used pink sticks against Arizona which were also auctioned off after the game.

RAGE SNAPSHOTS

Rycroft leads the league in goals (37), power play goals (17), and game-winning goals (9) and is sixth with 63 points overall. Dunbar was scored upon by New Mexico's Konrad Reeder on a penalty shot on Dec. 1. Brent Cullaton converted a penalty shot for the Rage during the team's remarkable comeback win against Tulsa on Dec. 29...Cullaton missed his fifth game in a row on Saturday due to injury.
