CHL Trade Deadline Yields Seven Deals
February 11, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League's (CHL) trade deadline came and went today with several teams making moves in an effort to improve their current team. In all, there were seven deals on Monday and two over the weekend leading up to the deadline. The biggest name changing addresses was the 2005 CHL Outstanding Defenseman Paul Esdale who leaves the Colorado Eagles to join the Corpus Christi Rayz.
The normally prolific Esdale has struggled finding points this season with the Eagles totaling just 17 points (4-13=17) in 33 games. He has been traded to the Rayz for future considerations. Corpus Christi is currently one point behind Austin for the fifth and final Southern Conference playoff spot. Esdale will be looked upon to improve the already potent Corpus Christi power play (fourth in the CHL at 18.7%).
The Southern Conference leading Laredo Bucks were busy pulling off two separate trades that in the end saw Rane Carnegie, David Victor and Gabe Yeung move on to new teams and talented forward Alex Goupil become a Laredo Buck. Goupil has 13 goals and 25 points in 43 games with the Thunder. Wichita then turned around and sent Carnegie to the Mississippi RiverKings in exchange for defenseman Peter Kennedy. Carnegie was seventh on the Bucks in scoring with 29 points (13-16=29).
The deals made at the deadline include:
-Forward Alex Goupil traded from Wichita to Laredo in exchange for defenseman David Victor and forward Rane Carnegie
-Forward Rane Carnegie traded from Wichita to Mississippi in exchange for defenseman Peter Kennedy
-Forward Jason Weitzel traded from Mississippi to Rio Grande Valley in exchange for Jon Hedberg
-Defenseman Paul Esdale traded from Colorado to Corpus Christi in exchange for future considerations
-Defenseman Jeff Winchester traded from Arizona to Youngstown as a part of a previous deal (Rob McVicar)
-Defenseman Jeff Winchester traded from Youngstown to Corpus Christi as a part of a previous deal (Jason Baird)
-Defenseman David Simoes traded from New Mexico to Youngstown as a part of a previous deal (Erik Johnson)
Two trades were completed over the weekend with Youngstown sending Mark Johnson to Odessa for future considerations and Laredo moving Yeung to Odessa also for future considerations.
