Rockies Fall Short in Pitcher's Duel
August 29, 2014 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
For the seventh time in eight games, the Grand Junction Rockies found themselves on the shortend of the scoreboard, and for the sixth time in that stretch they lost by a run in a 2-1 defeat to the Ogden Raptors.
Yonathan Daza struck out with Max George at second base to end the game after Roberto Ramos struck to end the eighth inning with Kevin Padlo standing at third base.
For six innings, the teams traded zeroes, with Rockies starter James Lomangino facing the minimum, but Billy Berezsniewicz started with the seventh with a double that hit off the left field line. With one out, he scored from third on Julian Leon's sacrifice fly. The Raptors added an unearned run in the eighth to take a 2-0 lead.
Luis Castro cut the Rockies lead in half when he singled home Daza in the bottom of the inning, but that was the Rockies only hit with a runner in scoring position in eight at bats. They left 10 on base.
Ogden was limited to just five hits, but Bereszniewicz had two of them. Grand Junction had six hits, with Castro accounting for half.
Jeff Brigham started the game for the Raptors and struck out a career-high eight in four scoreless innings. Raptors pitching struck out 14 for the night, giving them 39 over the last three games.
With the win, the Raptors are now 1.5 games up on the Rockies for first place in the South Division with seven games to play. The two teams will meet in Ogden on Friday night for the first game of a 2-game series at Lindquist Field.
