Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (August 28, 2014) - Great Falls and Helena split a makeshift doubleheader Thursday at Centene Stadium, as the Voyagers took game one which was a continuation from August 20 11-4, while the Brewers struck back for a 2-0 win in game two.
When the suspended game resumed, the Voyagers (13-16, 36-31) were already leading 4-0 after scoring three before the rains came back on August 20. In the second inning, Hunter Jones blasted a three-run homer off Luis Ortega (3-7), to give his team the lead. Great Falls then added another before the rain came in the third, as Dillon Haupt had an RBI single.
In relief of Zach Thompson who threw three scoreless innings to start the game eight days ago, Matt Ball (3-6) came on for Great Falls, and struggled in his first inning as he gave up three walks and the Brewers (9-20, 22-45) scored a pair to cut the lead to two.
Ball settled in after that, giving up just one unearned run for the remainder of his four-inning relief appearance.
The Voyagers added three to their lead in the fifth. Haupt and Jackson Laumann each collected RBI triples, and a Helena error pushed the margin to five at 7-2.
After Helena scored an unearned run to pull one back, Patrick Palmeiro hit his first home run of the season at Centene Stadium, and 10th of the year, in the seventh.
Jones hit his second homer of the game in the eighth, giving him his second multi-homer game of his career. Palmeiro added two more later in the frame with a double.
In game two, the story was Helena starter Zach Hirsch (2-1). The lefty fired six shutout frames, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 11 Voyagers (13-17, 36-32).
The Brewers (10-20, 23-45) scored the second game's only two runs in the fifth against Great Falls starter Yelmison Peralta (0-1). After a double and single started the frame, Dionis Hinojosa broke the scoreless deadlock with an RBI bounce out, and Luis Aviles followed with a single to make it 2-0.
That was plenty for Hirsch and Wesley Cox, who came on to toss a scoreless seventh to earn his third save.
The shutout for Helena was their second of the season, and broke their nine-game losing streak. For Great Falls, game two was the third time the Voyagers have been shutout in 2014.
The Voyagers wrap-up their homestand against the Brewers Friday night at Centene Stadium. Great Falls will send righty Luis Martinez (2-1, 1.33) to the hill, while Helena will counter with fellow right-hander Devin Williams (4-7, 4.87). First pitch is set for 7:00 and coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
