Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Renato Nunez and Ryon Healy had three hits each and Bruce Maxwell drove in three runs as Midland tripped Corpus Christi 9-5 Monday at Whataburger Field before 8,001.
Early fireworks gave left-hander Dillon Overton (2-1) plenty to work with. The former Oklahoma Sooner logged five innings before turning the game over to Andres Avila. Overton yielded three runs while scattering seven hits and stranding six. He walked one and struck out four in a 74-pitch appearance (53).
Teoscar Hernandez's one-out homer to left pushed Corpus Christi (12-12; 60-34) to a 1-0 first-inning advantage.
The visitors quickly equalized, Nunez taking Joe Musgrove deep the same direction for his 13th round-tripper. Musgrove's first appearance since June 24 was limited to two innings and 25 pitches (17 strikes) as the right-hander came off the disabled list Monday.
Brett Phillips' RBI infield single plated Jack Mayfield for a 2-1 Hooks lead in the second. Mayfield opened the frame by singling, and Jio Mier followed suit an out later.
Midland (15-9; 50-44) pounced on Hooks reliever Ruben Alaniz (2-2) during a 32-pitch third. The RockHounds batted around in a four-run, six hit barrage. Matt Olson's two-run double almost cleared the right-field fence; Josh Whitaker and Chad Oberacker (RBI) also produced two-base hits. Chad Pinder contributed a run-scoring single.
In the fifth, Midland extended its lead to 8-2 with Maxwell's three-run double off Alaniz, tagged for seven runs and 10 hits over 2 2/3. His relief, Juan Minaya, stemmed the tide by covering 2 1/3 scoreless innings and fanning four.
Mayfield's seventh-inning two-out single closed the gap to 8-4, but Ryon Healy homered off Travis Ballew in the ninth. Hooks third baseman Colin Moran answered, his second homer a shot to right off closer Ryan Dull.
It was the first long ball permitted by Dull this season in 42 2/3 innings.
Moran, who finished with three hits, has a .403 average over the last 16 games.
Chris Devenski (7-2) has Tuesday's pitching assignment for Corpus Christi vs. Chris Jensen (5-9) as the series continues. First pitch 7:05; Whataburger Field gates open at 5:30.
