Cotton Impressive in 6-0 Win over Naturals

July 20, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

For the second straight game Monday night, the Tulsa Drillers got a superb outing from their starting pitcher, and the result was a second straight victory. One night after Jeremy Kehrt limited Northwest Arkansas to only one run in seven innings, Jharel Cotton did him one better. Cotton threw seven shutout frames to lead the Drillers to a 6-0 victory at Springdale's Arvest Ballpark.

The game began one hour and 16 minutes late because of rain showers, but the delay seemed to have no effect on Cotton. The right-hander allowed only three hits and did not issue a walk while striking out a season high ten batters. The outing lowered his Texas League ERA to 2.39 and the win improved his record to 4-1.

Cotton's teammates gave him early support by scoring in four straight innings, with most of the damage coming against top Kansas City Royals pitching prospect Sean Manaea, who was making his Double-A debut.

The scoring began in the second inning when Lars Anderson led off with a base hit and eventually scored on a double by Adam Law.

Tulsa upped its lead to 2-0 in the third and Anderson was again involved. His single scored Brian Burgamy who had doubled.

A two-run double by Ali Solis made it 4-0 in the fourth, before Yadir Drake doubled off reliever Mark Peterson in the fifth and scored on another hit from Law.

The Drillers added their sixth and final run in the eighth when Ronald Torreyes singled and scored on Burgamy's second hit of the night.

Tulsa out-hit Northwest Arkansas 13-3 with Anderson leading the way with three hits. Burgamy, Drake Law and Adam Lavin collected two hits each.

Jacob Rhame followed Cotton to the mound and struck out the side in a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Ralston Cash pitched around a leadoff walk to close the game with a scoreless ninth.

Game three of the four-game series between the two teams is scheduled for Tuesday night. Ross Stripling (1-2, 6.00 ERA) will take the mound for the Drillers against Cody Reed (1-2, 4.57 ERA) of the Naturals. Starting time is slated for 7:05PM in Northwest Arkansas.
