Rockers Win to Split Series with Chinooks, Inch Closer to First Place
July 1, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Mequon, Wis. - The Rockers won over the Lakeshore Chinooks in Saturday night's matchup 4-1. With the win, the Rockers are now 19-15 on the season. The team remains in third place but is now just a half-game back of the Wausau Woodchucks and Wisconsin Rapids Rafters who are tied for first place with two games left of the league's first half.
This game was highlighted by timely hitting and the relief efforts on the hill for Green Bay. Green Bay relievers Jacob Faulkner (Princeton) and Michael Riley (Gateway CC) combined for five scoreless innings on the mound. During these innings, they only allowed two combined hits and struck out a total of ten batters.
Starting on the hill for the Rockers was Grayson Walker (Dickinson). It would be Walker's sixth appearance of the season, where he went four innings on the hill, only allowing one earned run and striking out three batters.
Contrary to last night, it was the Chinooks who struck first, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The run came off the bat of outfielder Adam Cootway (UW-Whitewater), who was with Green Bay in 2020.
Green Bay would tie the game in the fourth inning. Right fielder Jojo Jackson (Georgia State) hit an RBI groundout to the pitcher where first baseman Kyle West (West Virginia) would take off for home and be safe at the plate. The score was then 1-1 through four innings.
Faulkner would enter the game in relief for Walker. He pitched a hitless first two innings, only allowing one in his outing. He would be relieved after throwing four strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
In the seventh inning, the Rockers would take their first lead of the series since Friday night's first inning. Three runs would come in to score after an RBI single from catcher Nainoa Cardinez (Hawaii) and a two-RBI double from shortstop Cooper Kelly (Kansas). Headed into the seventh inning stretch, the Rockers led 4-1.
Riley entered the game in relief of Faulkner and struck out the first batter he saw to end the seventh inning. After two more scoreless innings from the Rockers' reliever, the Rockers held on to win 4-1.
Up next for the Rockers is their final series of the Northwoods League's first half. Green Bay will travel to Madison, WI for a two-game series against the Mallards on Sunday and Monday. Sunday night's first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
