June 2, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Ashwaubenon, Wis.- The Green Bay Rockers fell to the Wausau Woodchucks 7-4 Friday night at Capital Credit Union Park, going to 4-1 on the season heading into the second game of the series between the Woodchucks Saturday night.
After an early lead for Green Bay, the Woodchucks responded with seven straight runs to take down the Rockers in the first of 12 matchups of the 2023 summer.
Green Bay took an early lead in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch that scored JoJo Jackson from third and led 1-0 after the first two innings at Capital Credit Union Park.
The Woodchucks however responded in the top of the third with two runs of their own on a RBI single from Dalton Pearson and an RBI sacrifice fly from Michael Maginnis, bringing their lead to 2-1 going into the bottom of the third.
Wausau added two more runs in the fourth off a two-run homer from Dalton Pearson, increasing their lead to 4-1, but the Rockers continued to show fight throughout the middle innings after getting several runners on base throughout the contest.
AJ Anzai gave up just one earned run in two innings of relief to keep the Rockers in the game, while also recording two strikeouts and only giving up three hits, as Wausau went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings offensively.
After Green Bay went scoreless in the sixth, Wausau added three runs in the seventh led by an RBI single from Brady Jurgella. This put their lead at 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Rockers did not go away quietly however in the bottom half of the frame, following an RBI single from Kyle West and a two-run homer from Jackson, cutting the lead in half at 7-4 heading into the eighth.
Tatsuya Uemoto came on in relief in the eighth and pitched two scoreless innings to round out the pitching for Green Bay. In those two frames, he struck out four batters while allowing only two hits along with the no earned runs.
Despite Green Bay continuously showing fight down the stretch, Wausau sealed the deal and kept the Rockers scoreless in the last two innings to win their fourth straight game.
Green Bay and Wausau square off once again Saturday night at Capital Credit Union Park with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. Shotgun Jane will perform the pregame concert at 5:05 p.m. with it also being Country night at the ballpark.
