Late Defense Haunts the Mallards in Loss
June 2, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Mequon, WI - Madison traveled to Mequon, Wisconsin for the first time this season and dropped their second game of the season by a final score of 7-3 after a rocky 7th inning defensively.
After leading in each of their first four ball games, the Mallards fell behind in the bottom of the 1st inning with veteran right-hander Kade Lancour on the mound. A leadoff double by Taeg Gollert and a single from Nate Mieszkowski made for a strong start for the Chinooks offensively. Gollert scored on a throwing error to the plate from Mallards' right fielder Jack Tucker. Chinooks' first baseman Cody Kelly drove in Mieszkowski later in the inning with a double of his own.
Lakeshore's offense would go quiet from there against Lancour, who has now pitched in five different Northwoods League summers. The big righty from Illinois University - Chicago then gave the Mallards four scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks to close out his day.
Madison tied the game with one run a piece in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Korbyn Dickerson bounced out which allowed Canyon Brown (2-4) to score the first Mallards run and Jackson Chatterton plated the second with a sacrifice fly, scoring Tucker. The Mallards snatched the lead in the top of the 6th inning behind the third Chinooks' error of the game. Jake Goolsby took advantage with a sacrifice fly that scored Keenan Taylor to take a 3-2 lead.
The wheels fell off for Madison in the top of the 7th. First bullpen arm Cameron Clines, after a scoreless 6th, earned the first two outs with help from a spectacular diving catch made by Chatterton to begin the inning. After the two outs were made, six consecutive Chinooks reached base by way of double, single, two walks, and two hit batsmen. After the second hit-by-pitch tied the game at 3-3, Donnie Scott opted for Connor Langrell after an expedited warmup. Langrell got ahead of Taeg Gollert with two strikes, but Gollert fought back to draw a walk which gave the Chinooks a 4-3 lead. One batter later, chaos ensued. Mieszkowski singled which brought in two. An errant throw from the catcher Jayden Lobliner into left field resulted in the bases clearing, giving the Chinooks their 7-3 edge.
Madison would threaten in the top of the 9th but would not score. Lakeshore's bullpen threw three scoreless innings in relief of starter Thomas Harper.
Madison and Lakeshore continue their two-game series tomorrow from Kapco Park with a scheduled 6:35 P.M. first pitch.
