Green Bay Rockers News Release
Ashwaubenon, Wis. - The Green Bay Rockers fell to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 11-4 Wednesday afternoon, in the first of a two-game doubleheader at Capital Credit Union Park.
The Rockers could not recover from an early 3-0 deficit in the first inning, as the Rafters led wire-to-wire over Green Bay in the fifth meeting between the two teams this season.
Brendan Bobo (Cal State Fullerton) started the game strong for the Rafters with a three-run homer to right field, giving his team an early 3-0 lead through the opening inning of play after the Rockers did not score.
Cooper Dossett (Arkansas) kept Green Bay in the contest throughout the middle innings on the mound, pitching a scoreless second and third innings to allow the Rockers to stay in it being down 3-0 heading into the fourth.
The Rockers got their first run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer from Carlos Hernandez (Anderson), making the score 3-1 entering the fifth inning still in favor of the Rafters.
After Wisconsin Rapids went scoreless in the top of the fifth, Green Bay tacked on one more in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single from Mateo Matthews (Wagner College), cutting the deficit to just one through five innings of play at Capital Credit Union Park.
Wisconsin Rapids tacked on three runs in the sixth to put their lead all the way up to four, and led 6-2 going into the seventh inning, taking back the momentum from Green Bay with just a few innings left in game one of the doubleheader.
The Rafters added two more runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of RBIs from Logan Hugo (Eastern Michigan) and Chris Coniff (Wagner College), and these hits put the Rafters ahead 8-2 heading into the bottom of the frame.
However, the Rockers did not go away as they scored two runs in the seventh off RBI hits from Blake Wilson (Kansas State) and Austin Fawley (Kentucky), sparking a late Rockers rally as the Rafters lead was trimmed to 8-4 entering the eighth.
After each team went scoreless in the eighth, Wisconsin Rapids capped off their scoring in the ninth with three more runs, taking a 11-4 lead with just three outs left to go for the Green Bay offense.
The Rockers did not score in the bottom of the ninth and lost the first game of the doubleheader 11-4 against the Rafters at Capital Credit Union Park.
The Rockers will play the second game of the doubleheader at 6:35 p.m. against the Rafters at Capital Credit Union Park. Gates will open for fans at 5:30 p.m.
