
Rock Cats C Tom Murphy Named to USA Baseball Roster

New Britain, CT- The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, has announced that Catcher Tom Murphy was named to the USA Baseball Team Roster for the upcoming Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario, July 10 to 19. The U.S. Roster features 24 players not currently on Major League Baseball 40-man rosters. Jim Tracy, who managed 11 years in the Major Leagues, will manage the team.
The Pan Am Team will first gather in Cary, N.C., at the USA Baseball National Training Complex where it will train from July 4 to 8. The U.S. will then depart for Toronto for the Pan American Games where it will look to win its first Pan Am gold since 1967. First round action kicks off on July 11, against Puerto Rico at the President's Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark.
Murphy, 24, ranks third in the Eastern League in home runs and leads the Rock Cats with 41 RBI. He also ranks second on the club in runs scored, doubles and total bases. The West Monroe, NY native was named Eastern League Player of the Week on April 20th, the first weekly award of the season. He batted .405 with 6 doubles, 3 home runs and 7 RBI in the first 10 games and was leading the league in homers, slugging percentage (.811), OPS (1.299), doubles, total bases (30) and extra-base hits (9) and was tied for first in hits (15) at the time of the voting. Murphy also played for the 2011 USA Collegiate National Team.
Murphy, the Rockies' 3rd round pick in 2012 (SUNY Buffalo), hit the Rock Cats first home run as a Colorado affiliate on April 12 at New Hampshire. He also connected on the first home run at New Britain Stadium this season on April 16. Murphy smashed a walk-off home run on May 5 vs Harrisburg. The Rockies' top catching prospect (Baseball America #6 overall) also ripped a 2 RBI game winning hit on May 30th vs New Hampshire.
The 2013 World Baseball Classic Team was the latest professional team fielded by USA Baseball. In the most recent Pan American Games, the 2011 club earned the silver medal with a 3-2 record, falling to Canada in the gold-medal game.
