Ciriaco's Three Hits Overshadowed in 6-1 Defeat to Reading

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats fell to the Reading Fightin' Phils by the score of 6-1 on Tuesday evening at New Britain Stadium.

The visiting Fightins' put up two runs in the top of the second inning on the back of three straight hits to lead off the frame. Rock Cats starter LHP Ryan Carpenter gave up a single to 1B Brock Stassi and a C Andrew Knapp double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. CF Drew Heid sent a shot up the middle in the following at-bat that cleared the bases and gave Reading the early advantage.

With runners on second and third in the bottom of the second, Rock Cats RF Jeremy Barfield recorded a 5-3 groundout that allowed CF Noel Cuevas to score, making it a 2-1 ballgame. Ciriaco singled earlier in the inning, the first of his three hits on the night. The speedy infielder is now 7 for 13 in his last six games.

Reading tacked on another run in the top of the third as it was RF Kelly Dugan who singled home LF KC Serna from third base. Serna reached on a one-out double and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring the third run of the night for the Phillies affiliate. Dugan paced the Fightin' Phils offense with four hits and one RBI.

The final dagger of the night was a three-run single by Knapp. The backstop lined LHP Tyler Ybarra's offering to centerfield, scoring Serna, Dugan and Stassi, making it a 6-1 contest in Reading's favor.

Reading starter RHP Colin Kleven was impressive in his first Double-A start, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings. The right hander from Kamloops, BC walked none and struck out four en-route to his first Eastern League victory (1-0).

Carpenter was tagged with the loss (4-8) after allowing three runs, all earned, on nine hits while walking one and striking out four.

New Britain will march out RHP Bryan Evans on Wednesday evening while RHP Ben Lively gets the nod for the Phils. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
