TODAY'S GAME: Despite 4 home runs last night - 2 from Chris Colabello - the Wings fell 10-7 to the Durham Bulls (Rays) giving up a season-high 19 hits. Rochester has now lost 3 in a row and 6 of 7 overall to fall a season-worse 10 games below the .500 mark (15-25). The Wings are 9.0 games behind Buffalo and Pawtucket in the IL North... Meanwhile, the Bulls sit atop the International League wild card standings after taking the first 2 games of this series and are still 3.0 games back of the red-hot Norfolk Tides in the IL South. Game 3 between the Wings and Bulls is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. today.
COLABELLO'S COLOSSAL NIGHT: Red Wings 1B Chris Colabello's monster season continued Wednesday night as he went 3-for-4 with 2 homers, a double and 5 RBI... It was his 2nd, 2-homer game of his affiliated ball career (4/17/12) and first time he had recorded 10 total bases since signing with the Twins. It was also the first 10 TB game by a Red Wing since Chris Parmelee on 7/31/12... The 5 RBI was one shy of his career high (6; 5/31/12) but did tie a Red Wings season high (Thomas; 4/7 vs BUF)... The last time a Wings player had 6 RBI was D'Angelo Jimenez on 8/3/2010 @ CHA.
-Colabello joins Clete Thomas and Jeff Clement as the 3 Red Wings with multi-homer games this season.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS: After his big night Wednesday, Chris Colabello continues to climb the ranks of the IL's elite... He currently ranks 5th in the IL in batting average (.340), T-2nd in HR (10), T-3rd in RBI (29), T-2nd in hits (52), 4th in SLG (.621), T-3rd in extra-bases hits (23) and first in TB (95)... The Wings first baseman owns a 7-game hit streak and has at least one hit in 16 of 17 games overall (.386; 27-of-70, 9 2B, 4 HR, 12 R, 12 RBI)... On the season he has a hit in 32 of 40 games (80%)
-Colabello is on pace to hit 36 home runs and 104 RBI... It would be the first 30-HR, 100-RBI season since Jim Fuller in 1973
BULLED OVER: The Durham Bulls claimed the 2011 and 2012 season series against the Red Wings, 6-2, and have now won 14 of the last 18 games between the two teams... The Bulls have outscored the Red Wings 51-29 and out-hit them 96-54 in taking 5 of the last 6 games from Rochester at Frontier Field dating back to last season. The last time the Wings won a series against the Bulls at home was 2008 (3-1) -- the same year of their last season series win over Durham (5-3)... Since 2003, Rochester is now just 33-48 against Durham, including a 19-22 mark at Frontier Field.
-The Red Wings are winless in 15 all-time series (0-8-7) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park
IT'S BEEN AWHILE: Last night, the Wings got a pair of home runs from two unlikely sources in Eric Fryer and Doug Bernier . Fryer's 5th inning solo homer was his first home run since June 7, 2011 while a member of the Indianapolis Indians... Fryer hadn't recorded a hit since April 30 and was mired in an 0-for-17 skid with 10 strikeouts before his blast off Rays prospect Jake Odorizzi... It had been even longer for Bernier, whose 9th inning, two-out HR was his first since June 22, 2010 while playing for Indianapolis. The homer was just Bernier's 2nd International League home run and came in exactly is 1,000 IL AB (Both IL homers against DUR)... Also, much like Fryer, Bernier was in a 0-for-16 slump with 10 strikeouts before his homer.
HITTIN' THE HOMER: After a 4-homer barrage on Wednesday, the Red Wings have now hit 36 homers in the first 40 games of the season... Last season, the Wings didn't hit their 36 home run until June 17 -- their 69th game of the season. The 36 home runs rank 3rd in the International League -- 12 behind Buffalo's league-leading 48 homers.
-The Wings are on pace for 129 home runs this season, which would be the most since the 2008 season.
STILL STREAKIN': INF Eric Farris extended his hit streak to a tied for team high 9 games last night with his 4th inning single... Over the streak, Farris is hitting .355 (11-for-31) with a triple, double, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Last season, Farris had a season-high 11-game hit streak 8/17-8/27 with Nashville... His career-high is 15 games in 2008 with West Virginia (A)
SETTING THE BAR: Red Wings reliever LHP Caleb Thielbar has been the most consistent Red Wings reliever of late after 2 more shutout innings on Wednesday behind Cole De Vries. Since allowing 5 earned runs on five hits in an outing for the first time since 5/21/10 (Wisconsin, A), Thielbar has responded by allowing just 3 hits in 10.1 scoreless innings over his last 6 appearances dropping his ERA from 6.60 to 3.91... On the season, he also has the best SO/9 inn. ratio on the team (11.7; 33 SO/25.1 IP) striking out at least one batter in 15 of 16 appearances and multiple batters in 9 outings... He has been lights out at home, allowing just 2 ER in 15.0 IP (1.20 ERA), compared to 9 ER in 10.1 IP on the road (7.84).
-Dynamite Late: Thielbar has yet to allow an earned run in the 7th inning or later (12.2 IP)... In the 6th inning and earlier, he has a 7.24 ERA (11 ER/13.2 IP)
