
Clippers Edge Chiefs in Extras

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost a heartbreaker to the Columbus Clippers 4-2 in 11 innings on Thursday. Lonnie Chisenhall scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in a three-run 11 th inning. The Chiefs have gone to extra innings in three of the last four games.
Columbus (23-18) got the scoring started in the top of the third inning. Omir Santos doubled to lead off the inning. Following a groundout that advanced the runner to third, Cord Phelps hit a line-drive double to right field to score Santos and give the Clippers a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (15-25) got its revenge in the fifth. After a 10-pitch at-bat to start the frame, Zach Walters reached on an error by Columbus second baseman Ryan Rohlinger. The next batter, Mike Costanzo, doubled to make to put runners on second and third for Kris Watts. The Chiefs' catcher hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Walters and tied the game at one.
Those runs were all either starter gave up. Yunesky Maya went seven innings for Syracuse and gave up just one run on five hits while striking out five. On the other side, Carlos Carrasco tossed five three-hit innings for Columbus, allowing just one unearned run and striking out four.
The deadlock continued until the ninth inning when the Clippers threatened to take the lead in the top of the ninth. Matt Carson singled and stole second with one out. After a strikeout, Santos reached on an infield single to third base when Carlos Rivero's throw to first was late. Carson tried to make it home from second on the play, but Chris Marrero threw home to get him out at the plate.
The game went to extra innings and remained in a tie until the 11th. Chisenhall walked to lead off the frame and stole second base. Rohlinger laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance him to third. Following an intentional walk, Mike Crotta threw a wild pitch that scored Chisenhall. Columbus wasn't done, though. Santos and Juan Diaz tallied back-to-back singles to score runs and put the Clippers up 4-1.
Syracuse got a home run in the bottom of the frame from Chris Marrero, who launched his eighth of the season. Columbus closer Preston Guilmet retired the final three batters to end the game.
Syracuse finishes its home stand Friday against Columbus. First pitch is set for 7:00 with the Chiefs sending right-hander Ryan Perry to the mound, while right-hander Danny Salazar goes for the Clippers.
