Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- In the opener of their current homestand, the Pawtucket Red Sox extended their dominance over the Gwinnett Braves by winning a 10th consecutive encounter the last two years.
Two days later, it's the Braves who own a series winning streak, thanks to a brilliant pitching performance by right-hander Omar Poveda, who yielded just one run in the first eight innings of a 6-4 victory Thursday at McCoy Stadium.
Poveda (W, 3-2) induced a pair of double plays to keep the Sox off the scoreboard in the first two innings. Overall, he allowed seven hits, walked just one and struck out three.
His counterpart Rubby De La Rosa (L, 0-1), who entered the evening following four straight scoreless outings, totaling 14.0 innings, four walks and 19 strikeouts, was far from sharp. De La Rosa overcame a pair of walks and a single by leaving the bases loaded in the first inning.
In the top of the fourth, however, his second walk of the inning, coupled with an error, led to a 1-0 lead for the Braves. Brandon Boggs scored when Joe Leonard's line drive to right field was mishandled by Jeremy Hazelbaker.
Gwinnett then capitalized on a leadoff walk to Joey Terdaslovich by reliever Chris Hernandez to start the sixth. Boggs followed with an RBI double for a 2-0 advantage.
With one out in the seventh inning, the Braves' Jose Constanza singled to set up a two-run homer by Todd Cunningham. Cunningham was batting .217 with eight RBI through 39 games before Thursday. He would be heard from again.
After the PawSox finally scored on a double by Brock Holt and single by Jose Iglesias in the last of the eighth to draw within 4-1, the Braves struck twice in the next half inning. Cunningham doubled for this third hit and third RBI, before coming home on a single by Tyler Pastornicky.
Pawtucket scored three times in its last turn at the plate, after Poveda left in favor of Wirfin Obispo. Walks of Drew Sutton and Hazelbaker preceded a two-run double by Ronald Bermudez. Trailing 6-3, Holt drove in Bermudez to chase Obispo.
Cory Rasmus (S, 7), who saved a Gwinnett victory the previous night, induced a grounder to third by Alberto Rosario to preserve the lead and record his seventh save.
NOTES: The PawSox placed two players on the disabled list prior to Thursday's game, including pitcher Chris Carpenter (triceps strain) and Mark Hamilton (right wrist fracture)...On Saturday the PawSox will stage the first of four Free Youth Clinics at McCoy Stadium, sponsored by Citizens Bank, from 2 p.m.-3:15 p.m....Pawtucket and Gwinnett conclude their season series at 7:05 on Friday, as Alfredo Aceves (2-1, 3.50) faces lefty Daniel Rodriguez (2-3, 6.82).
