THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD
GAME #87 - HOME GAME #42 - 6:05 P.M.
PAWTUCKET RED SOX (49-39) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (39-47)
RHP TONY PENA JR. (0-6, 6.23) vs. RHP JEFF MANSHIP (4-1, 2.79)
HAPPY FIFTH OF JULY: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 3-game vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox), continuing a 6-game homestand that leads into the All-Star Break. The Red Wings started the homestand by losing last night's opener 7-4. After 2 more with the PawSox, the Red Wings will host Lehigh Valley (Phillies) for 3 Saturday-Sunday, including a doubleheader Sunday to wrap up the unofficial first half of the season.
a Time Warner Cable Sports is broadcasting live tonight's game, which is also being simulcast on New England Sports Network (NESN) throughout New England.
a The Red Wings open at home after the All-Star Break, hosting Toledo (Tigers) for 4 games July 12-15. Toledo is the only team the Red Wings have yet to face in 2012.
PEOPLE WILL COME, RAY: The Red Wings yesterday welcomed 10,412 fans through the turnstiles for their 2nd-largest crowd of the year, trailing only the 12,371 who turned out for Opening Day, April 7 vs. Buffalo (Mets). Last night marked the 4th crowd in excess of 10,000, the 7th in of more than 8,000.
a The Red Wings have welcomed 205,165 fans in 38 openings overall, an average of 5,399 per opening. Rochester last season welcomed 209,906 fans in 39 openings, an average of 5,382 per opening.
LONG DIVISION: The Red Wings are just 3-6 since returning to International League North Division play June 26. The stretch comes on the heels of going 22-18 in games exclusively against teams outside of the division from May 15-June 25. Including a 14-23 record against IL North rivals from Opening Day to May 14, the Red Wings are only 17-29 against their own division.
a Only 6 teams in the entire IL enter play tonight with a winning record, and 4 of those clubs are in the North Division: Lehigh Valley (50-36), Pawtucket (49-39), Empire State (47-40), and Syracuse (44-42). The other 2 squads are South Division leader Charlotte (48-39) and West Division leader Indianapolis (55-31).
OH, DEAR: The Red Wings have lost 5 of their last 7, 6 of their last 9, and are 10-14 since a season-best 4-game winning streak June 6-9. The Wings haven't won more than 2 games in a row since that 4-game streak, which tied a season high from May 3-5. Rochester is 25-24 beginning May 15, however, after opening the season 14-23.
a Without a season-worst 8-game losing streak April 25-May 2, the Red Wings would be a .500 ballclub at 39-39.
IN NEED OF A PICK-ME-UP: Red Wings' starting pitchers are winless in the last 9 games, going 0-4 with a 5.31 ERA (23 ER/39.0 IP) in that time. The most-recent win by a starter came June 25, when Cole De Vries defeated Charlotte (White Sox) at Frontier Field.
a Luke French yesterday went just 1.1 innings for the shortest non-injury or rehab start by a Red Wing since August 26, 2008, when Tom Shearn went only 0.1 inning vs. Syracuse (Blue Jays). Shearn allowed 5 runs on 6 hits before being lifted en route to a 9-1 loss.
a Red Wings' starters are just 4-11 with a 6.24 ERA (73 ER/105.1 IP) in 24 games beginning June 10, the day after Liam Hendriks's last start with the club before getting recalled to Minnesota. Rochester starters are 21-28 with a 4.22 ERA (199 ER/424.0 IP) overall.
WHERE'D EVERYBODY GO?: With the departure of righthander Casey Fien to Minnesota, only 11 players from the Red Wings' Opening Day 25-man roster are active with the club. That total includes 4 pitchers: Samuel Deduno, Jeff Manship, Esmerling Vasquez, and Brendan Wise. It must be noted that 2 pitchers from the Opening Day roster are still with the team, but are on the 7-Day Disabled List: Carlos Gutierrez and Anthony Slama.
a 46 different players, including 24 pitchers, have appeared in at least one game for the Red Wings. The 2011 club employed the services of 56 players, including 28 pitchers.
a The Twins have promoted 11 Red Wings, including 6 pitchers, to the majors thus far.
SLOW STARTS: The Red Wings have given up at least one first-inning run in 3 out of their last 4 games, in 6 of their last 9, and in 9 of their last 17. Rochester has been outscored in the first inning 5-2 in their last 4 games, 15-6 in their last 9 contests, and 23-9 in their last 17 affairs. The Red Wings are being outscored 48-38 in the first inning overall.
a Luke French has allowed 12 first-inning run in his 12 starts. In fact, 26 of the 40 runs he's allowed have come in the first 2 innings of a game.
THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: The Red Wings' bullpen worked a season-high 19.0 consecutive scoreless innings before Bobby Lanigan allowed a run in the 9th inning last night vs. Pawtucket.
a Caleb Thielber worked 2.0 scoreless innings last night and he has tossed 5.0 consecutive scoreless innings in his last 3 outings.
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 2004, the Dodgers defeat the Diamondbacks 6-5 in 10 innings at Dodger Stadium, but Eric Gagne's streak of 84 consecutive saves finally ends. Gagne gives up 2 runs in the 9th to blow a 5-3 lead. Luis Gonzalez's RBI double makes it a one-run game and Chad Tracy's RBI single ties it.
