MONDAY, JULY 16, 2012 w HARBOR PARK

GAME #96 - ROAD GAME #46 - 7:15 P.M.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (47-48) at NORFOLK TIDES (50-46)

LHP LUKE FRENCH (1-4, 5.98) vs. RHP JAKE ARRIETA (NR)

HARBORING THE RED WINGS: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin an 8-game roadtrip with the first of 4 against Norfolk (Orioles) at Harbor Park. Following 4 in the Old Dominion State, the Red Wings will head to Durham (Rays) for a 4-game set Friday-Monday. Then it's back home for 4 against International League North Division rival Syracuse (Nationals) July 24-27.

a The Red Wings tonight begin a stretch of playing 16 of 20 games on the road through August 5. Rochester will, however, play 18 of its final 29 games at Frontier Field beginning August 6.

ROSTER NEWS: Outfielder Evan Bigley today was transferred to Triple-A Rochester from Double-A New Britain. The 25-year-old, who was selected by the Twins in the 10th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, will make his Triple-A debut once he appears in a game. Bigley batted .268 with 19 doubles, 12 homers, and 66 RBI in 88 games with New Britain. He hit .359 (37-for-103) with runners in scoring position.

a To make room for Bigley on the 25-man roster, the Red Wings placed infielder/outfielder Michael Hollimon on the 7-Day Disabled List with a strained right knee.

DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT: The Red Wings have won a season-high 4 in a row and 8 of their last 9 beginning July 5. They are also an IL-best 10-3 in July. The 4-game winning streak is Rochester's 4th of the season. They also won 4 in a row May 3-5, June 6-9, and July 5-8 (first game of doubleheader).

a A win tonight would give the Red Wings their longest winning streak since a 5-game run August 10-14, 2010. That streak started with the 2nd game of an August 10 doubleheader.

a The Red Wings have posted 8 wins in a 9-game stretch for the first time since May 4-12, 2009, when they also won 8 of 9. A win tonight would give Rochester 9 wins in a 10-game span for the first time since August 4-14, 2008, when it won 10 in an 11-game span.

THE CLIMB TO .500: At 47-48, the Red Wings are one game under .500, the closest they've been to the break-even point since April 26, when they entered the 2nd game of a doubleheader that day vs. Syracuse with a 9-10 record. The Wings haven't had a .500 record since posting a 9-9 record going into that April 26 doubleheader.

a Since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28, the Red Wings are 27-18.

a Rochester is 33-25 beginning May 15 after opening the season 14-23. The Wings are also 38-32 beginning May 3, playing slightly better than .500 baseball for nearly half the season.

CELLAR DWELLERS NO MORE: The Red Wings entered their game Saturday vs. Toledo (Tigers) not in last place in the IL North for the first time since May 12, when they began play that day a half game better than Syracuse. Rochester enters play tonight 2.5 games ahead of Syracuse, which was just swept in a 4-game series against Empire State (Yankees).

LET'S DO THIS: With 49 games remaining, the Red Wings are already just 6 wins shy of matching last year's win total of 53 and 7 short of eclipsing it. The Red Wings are off to their best 95-game start since the 2009 club went an identical 47-48. That club went on to lose its next 3 games, so a win tonight would give the Wings their best 96-game start since 2007, when they were 51-45. Rochester was 23 games below .500 at 36-59 at this point last year and 25 games below at 35-60 at this juncture in 2010.

THAT JUST HAPPENED: The Red Wings yesterday completed a 4-game sweep vs. Toledo, their first sweep of a series longer than 2 games since a 4-gamer vs. Charlotte (White Sox) May 8-11, 2009. It also was Rochester's first sweep against the Mud Hens since a 4-gamer August 17-21, 1992 at Ned Skeldon Stadium in Toledo.

a All 4 wins in the recently-completed series were of the come-from-behind variety. In yesterday's finale, the Red Wings scored twice in the 9th for their 4th walk-off win and their 2nd victory when trailing after 8 innings. The Wings yesterday trailed 5-1 after 3 and half innings, matching their largest deficit overcome to win this season. Rochester trailed 10-6 through 7 innings May 30 at Charlotte and came back to win 11-10 in 10 innings.

ROAD WOES: The Red Wings are just 12-25 in true road games, not including the 8 contests played at Frontier Field against Empire State as the "road" team. Rochester has won just 2 road series all year, sweeping a 2-game series at Syracuse to open the season and taking 3 of 4 at Louisville (Reds) June 14-17. The Wings are looking for their first series victory at Harbor Park since winning 3 of 4 April 29-May 2, 2006.

a The Red Wings, meanwhile, are 35-23 at Frontier Field. They are tied with Lehigh Valley (Phillies) for the most home wins in the IL. Rochester has already eclipsed its home win total of 32 from 2011.

PITCHING IN: The Red Wings lead the IL with a 2.71 ERA (34 ER/113.0 IP) in 13 games in July. The Wings rank 7th in the IL with a 3.86 ERA overall. They finished last in the league in ERA in both 2010 and 2011.

a Rochester has employed the services of 25 pitchers, 21 of which have posted at least one win.

MORE RUNS NEEDED: The Red Wings rank last in the IL with 336 runs scored, 36 behind the next closest team Lehigh Valley, which has 372. The Wings have, however, scored 4 or more runs in a season-high 4 straight games for the 2nd time. They also accomplished the feat in their 4-game series at Louisville. Rochester last scored at least 4 runs in 5 straight games August 29-September 3, 2011.

ONEDERFUL: The Red Wings are 15-11 in one-run games, including a 13-6 mark at Frontier Field and a 2-5 mark in true road games. The Wings yesterday won their 7th straight one-run game at home. Rochester last year went 10-20 in one-run affairs.
