International League Names Players of the Week
Published on July 16, 2012 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Buffalo outfielder Fred Lewis and Columbus pitcher Jeanmar Gomez have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from
July 9-15. Gomez, who won the same honor the week of June 6-12, 2011, becomes the third player from Columbus to bring home an IL weekly award in 2012, following Matt LaPorta (April 23-29) and Russ Canzler (June 11-17). Lewis is the first member of the Bisons to be so honored this season.
FRED LEWIS, Buffalo Bisons IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Bisons outfielder Fred Lewis made the most of the All-Star shortened week, leading the International League with three home runs and seven RBI over the four days since the break. Lewis helped the Bisons take three out of four games in Pawtucket, going deep three times in the first two games of the series. Buffalo's leadoff hitter also stole two bases and scored five runs over the four-day stretch, extending his team lead in both categories.
31-year-old Fred Lewis is a veteran of over 500 games in the Major Leagues with the Giants, Blue Jays, and Reds. Lewis spent the spring with the Cleveland Indians, but was released in April and later signed by the Mets as a free agent. Lewis is a native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
JEANMAR GOMEZ, Columbus Clippers IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right-handed hurler Jeanmar Gomez faced just 29 batters in tossing a two-hit complete game shutout Friday night in Indianapolis. Gomez retired the first ten hitters he faced before allowing a fourth inning single to Chase d'Arnaud, who he promptly picked off of first base. Then after two walks, he struck out Brandon Boggs to end Indy's only significant threat. Tony Sanchez opened the fifth with a single, but after erasing him via a double play, Gomez went on to sit down the next 13 Indians to complete the 2-0 victory.
24-year-old Jeanmar Gomez has made just three starts for Columbus this season after being optioned from Cleveland in late June. Last year's International League ERA champion had posted a 4-7 record with a 5.18 ERA with Cleveland before being assigned to Columbus. Gomez is a native of Caracas, Venezuela.
