PawSox Power Past Chiefs with 8-5 Win

The PawSox defeated Syracuse 8-5 Monday night at McCoy. In his first appearance with the PawSox since rehabbing from elbow surgery, Chris Carpenter went one inning and gave up one walk. Mauro Gomez went 3 for 4 with a homerun. The last time that the PawSox had three homeruns in a game was July 30, 2012 at Lehigh Valley.

The PawSox had a 3-run first inning and took the lead early. Mauro Gomez doubled (28) and scored Che-Hsaun Lin who singled to right. Lars Anderson scored on a Syracuse throwing error by the third baseman and Gomez scored on a single by J.C. Linares.

After three scoreless innings, Gomez hit a homerun (20) to left field and extended the PawSox lead, 4-0. Then in the sixth, Linares led off with a homerun (2) to left to make it 5-0 and was followed by back to back singles. RBI sac fly by Jose Iglesias scored Rivera and made the score 6-0.

Syracuse got on the board after a 2-run homerun by Brett Carroll and trailed the PawSox 6-2 after seven innings. The PawSox answered back with a 2-run homerun from Mike Rivera in the seventh to extend their lead, 8-2. Gomez hit a double (28) to lead off the inning.

Two homeruns by the Chiefs cut the PawSox lead to 8-4 in the eighth inning and a homerun in the ninth brought it to 8-5. Corey brown led the Chiefs with three hits.

Tony Pena Jr. earned the win after pitching five innings and giving up five hits. For Syracuse, John Lannan took the loss. He pitched five innings and gave up six runs on nine hits. The series continues tomorrow at 7:05 pm at McCoy Stadium. Doug Mathis (6-6, 4.23) faces Yunesky Maya (6-7, 3.68).
