Yankees Demolish Knights 14-2

Rochester, NY - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees scored a season high 14 runs en route to a 14-2 victory over the Charlotte Knights in the opening game of a four game series at Frontier Field. In the victory, every player in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lineup reached base, with seven of the nine scoring a run in the contest.

The Yankees scored early and often en route to their series opening victory over the Knights. Corban Joseph put the Yankees on the board in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single to left field. Kevin Russo scored from third on a passed ball to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre its second run of the ballgame. The Yankee offense was far from done, adding two more runs in the bottom of the third on a Brandon Laird two-run blast to centerfield.

Although four runs were more than enough, the Yankee offense exploded for a five run home half of the fourth. Chris Dickerson extended the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead as he scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jack Cust. Later in the inning, Russo scored on a wild pitch and Cole Garner capped the Yankee rally with a two-run homer over the bullpen in left field to give the Yankees the 9-0 advantage.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added four more runs in the fifth on a Corban Joseph ground rule double and three run blast by Cust. It was his team leading 20th home run of the season and gave the Yankees a 13-0 advantage heading into the sixth. Dallas McPherson finally put the Knights on the board in the top half of the sixth with a two-run shot to right field to bring the Knights to within 13-2. The Yankees answered right back in the bottom of the seventh when Yankee newcomer Kosuke Fukudome roped an RBI single to right field, plating Cust from second. With the Fukudome RBI single, the Yankee lead increased to 14-2.

Ramon Ortiz earned the win for the Yankees improving to 7-3. The veteran right-hander allowed two runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out five over six innings on the bump. Charlie Leesman got the loss for the Knights, allowing four runs (three earned) in just three innings. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored the majority of its runs off of Charlotte reliever Shane Lindsay.

The Yankees and Knights take the diamond Tuesday evening at 7:05 for game two of a four game set at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York. Right-hander Adam Warren (5-6, 3.90) gets the ball for the Yankees, while fellow right-hander Charlie Shirek (8-4, 3.50) gets the nod for the Knights.
