Roadrunners Drop Series Opener

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners lost their fourth-game in a row after falling to the Fort Worth Cats 6-2 Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Jose Canseco got the Cats (17-10) on the board in the top of the first with an RBI fielder's choice that allowed Tim Maitland to score from third making it 1-0.

Canseco finished the night 1-for-5 with a single and an RBI.

The Roadrunners (12-17) answered in the bottom of the first on Wes Patterson's RBI single to left field that allowed Agustin Septimo to score tying the game at one.

Edinburg took advantage of a throwing error by the Cats in the bottom of the second inning and took the 2-1 lead after Trevor Whyte scored from second.

Fort Worth answered in the top of the third with an RBI double from Chris Ellison that scored Maitland from first tying the game at two.

The Cats took the lead for good in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Ellison hit a two-run single to right field scoring Brian White and Kori Melo giving them the 4-2 lead.

Fort Worth added scored two more runs in the top of the eighth to add to their lead and Wes Alsup pitched a scoreless ninth giving the Cats the 6-2 victory.

Roman Gomez (1-1) pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out six for his first win of the season.

Taylor Reid (0-2) pitched well but took the loss after allowing four runs in six innings of work while striking out seven.

Univision Radio sponsors the game on Sunday where the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a Tote Bag and it is RGV Food Bank night where four cans of food will get you one general admission ticket for Sunday's game will sponsor Sunday's game.

The Roadrunners and Cats will play the second game of their four-game series Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
