San Angelo Colts News Release
Alexandria, La. --- The Alexandria Aces scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the San Angelo Colts in walk-off fashion, 5-4, Saturday night at Bringhurst Field.
Left fielder Alex Foltz scored the winning run on a fielder's choice grounder by right fielder Zack Cadet. Colts' second baseman Jon Dziomba gloved the ball, but his throw home was late, and Foltz was safe.
San Angelo and Alexandria were tied at two through most of the game, and then the Colts took a 4-2 lead with a run apiece in the seventh and eighth innings. Shortstop Danny Hernandez led the Colts offensively with a two-run homer in the second inning, and an RBI single in the eighth.
Hernandez went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season and three RBIs.
Things fell apart for the Colts in the bottom of the ninth, though. Aces' shortstop Michael Haynes began the inning with a single, and then advanced to second on a walk drawn by third baseman Cameron Dullnig. With two men on and nobody out, Foltz dropped down a sacrifice bunt.
Colts' closer Alfredo Caballero fielded the bunt and opted to throw to third base. His throw bounced into left field, however, allowing Haynes and Dullnig to score and tie the game. Foltz reached third on the error and then scored on Cadet's game-winning fielder's choice.
Caballero (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing three unearned runs on just one hit in 1/3 of an inning. Aces' reliever Michael Calderon earned the win by virtue of retiring the final two Colts' batters in the top of the ninth.
The Colts and Aces are now tied for second place in the United League at 15-14. This four-game series continues Sunday night at Bringhurst Field. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., and the game can be heard live on 1260 KKSA beginning at 5:50 p.m.
The Colts return home to Foster Field on Wednesday, June 26 to begin a four-game series against the Thunder.
