Alexandria Aces News Release
Schmeltzer with a two out single and Danny Hernandez drove in his third run of the game for insurance in the eighth, Alexandria's Michael Haynes greeted new relief pitcher Alfredo Cavallero with a sharp single through the box to lead off the ninth.
After third baseman Cameron Dullnig walked, newcomer Alex Foltz was asked to sacrifice the runners into scoring position by manager Von Hayes.
Foltz responded with a bunt towards third that Cavallero threw away, allowing both runners to score and placing Foltz at third base.
One out later Zack Cadet hit a sharp ground ball to second baseman Jon Dziomba that was bobbled momentarily by the San Angelo keystone sacker. He recovered to throw home, but Foltz was able to slide across home plate ahead of the tag from catcher Bubby Williams to give the Aces (15-14) the victory.
Michael Calderon (1-0), who retired both batters he faced in his professional debut, was the winning pitcher for Alexandria.
Hernandez hit his second home run of the season with a man on off Clay Vanderlaan to give San Angelo a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
